Lynch Law.
~ ‘Lynch law in its usual meaning is
fiaid to be traceable to a Galway worthy. In 1493 one James FitzStephen
Lynch, a a mayor of that city, sentenced
} his own son to death for murder and,
fearing a Tescue, had the cuiprit
brought tiome and hanged before his
own door. The tradition may be found
alluded to in Thackeray's “Irish Sketch
Book.” There are critics, however,
who say that the law was in its origin
essentially American, and they date it
‘back to Charles Lynch, a Virginian
planter of the seventeenth century.
