“A WOMAN'S CAPAVANSARY.
N New York City a brave and original thinker hes built a hotel exclasively for women! A bold idea, indeed! In certain countries the gallant
railroad managers have a car labeled, “Women and children.” These
compartments are passed by with a sniff of scorn, And why should the spirit
of woman be proud? Why should she pass the ‘car labeled “Women and
children” with aptarned nose, because the feminine mind sees in that placard
go dear to the heart of man, an implied insult? Why should they be Seques~
tered in a car where there are only “women and children?” Assuredly that
would not be pleasant. So the woman with her children manages to patronize
a car where there isa sprinkling of men, because, as is so well known,.there
are several degrees of safety attached to traveling when a man is in the car.
Whether the Martha Washington Hotel, which is to be exclusively for the
use of women, will be a success remains to be seen. The builder thinks thatthere are enough lone women in New York City to make the concern a paying
ene, and that a hotel solely set apart for the fair sex would prove a great at-.
t-aetion. : eae
Perhaps this hotel will. Still, if a woman has been all day working ina
store with a crowd of other women, is she likely to wish to continue the ass0ciation in her holiday hours? Is she not more likely to patronize a hotel, if
she does live in a hotel, where there is a commingling of the sexes? The
truth is that there is no relaxation unless men and women mingle with each
other. Human nature is not so peculiarly constituted that man can only flod:
pleasure by associating with men. “The Martha Washington Hotel may prove
8 satisfactory investment. Still there are grave doubts whether, asa promoter
of the social amenities, the hotel will stand out as a shining mark.

CUBAN RECIPROCITY =
OPPOSED BY WOODS.
i"
San Francisco, March 12 — Congressman S. D. Woods. returned from
Washington late last night and today he was busy in his office with a stack of
accumulated mail co
“I am not yet appointed naval officer of this port,” he said. “The President hag been asked by the California delegation to appoint me to that position
but the appointment has not been made. I do not know if it will ever be
made. Possibly the President basa dislike for me. Iam opposed to him on
the question of Cuban reciprocity and I bave~been most active in that Opposition. My opposition may result in the President naming someone else for the.
position. I, however, will never withdraw from the stand I have taken on the
Cuban question. Rec'procity with Ouba would result in great injury to the
California farmer and I will fight it to the last. The California delegation
fought it in the House and in the Senate and my belief is that it will not
pass.” <<

There is more Catarrh in this section
of the country than all other diseases
pat together, and until the last few
. years was supposed to be incurable.
For a great many years doctors propounced it a local disease and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with loca! treatment, provounuced it incurable. Science
nas proven cCatarrh to be a constitational disease and therefore requiree
constitutional treatment. Hali’s Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J.

items we cull from the Republican of

Mondesy night while Lieut. Schlumpf
was patroling the streets a gang of
seven hobos got off a freight train and
came.over to town. Th: Lieutenant,
however, was right after them and four
of the hardest of the gang were compelled to leave on the same train on
which they arrived.
Constable William MeDougald arrested a colored man here this morning who is wanted in Sacramento for
robbery. The fellow did not want to
be taken and made a dash for liberty,
but Constable McDougald kept after
him and be was captured in the. St,

The weather has been quite pleasant
for. the past few days. It vas the
warmest we have had for months, and
yet the thermome'er hardly got above
fifty. The snow around town is melting rapidly and on tbe hillsides in
many pleces the ground is bare.
As one of the resulte of thé great
amount of cold weather that we have
hed this winter Donner Lake is pow
frozen over with snow and ice to a
thickness of about two feet. This is
rvery “antsual as the lake is seldom
frozen over more than a few weeks at
@ time. The fish from -the lake, which
generally begin to run out into the
streams to spawn at this season have
not begun to leave the Iske yet.
Indien Bodus, Sachem of tlie Washoes, imbibed too freely Sunday after.

up on the street and put in jail for the
night. He was oblivious to his surroundings then, bat next morning

his whisky bat he rataasls tell until
he was told he might remain in jail;

A malicious ramor has been circulated to the effect that Wm. H. Smith,
the grocer, isin financial straits and
that he is about to assign for the benefit of his creditors, As the rumor is
utterly without foundation, Mr. Smitb
is naturally indignant. He said today:
“I will give $50 to any person who
will show me any authority for making such a statement, Itisa malicfous lie. Iam in a position to mind
my own business, and it would be well
for others to mind theirs.”
