aos — Nevapa City Dairy TRANSCRIPT] NAT. P. BROWN, -Proprietor. —_—_— : / TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION Byfiel, + + + = _ $6 Per Year. By Carrier, « . Delivered to any part of the city. 12 1-2c Per Week Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City TORI SOA gic ois Fs ni ey Ee eeee eee eeececes March 12, 1903 “A WOMAN'S CAPAVANSARY. N New York City a brave and original thinker hes built a hotel exclasively for women! A bold idea, indeed! In certain countries the gallant railroad managers have a car labeled, “Women and children.” These compartments are passed by with a sniff of scorn, And why should the spirit of woman be proud? Why should she pass the ‘car labeled “Women and children” with aptarned nose, because the feminine mind sees in that placard go dear to the heart of man, an implied insult? Why should they be Seques~ tered in a car where there are only “women and children?” Assuredly that would not be pleasant. So the woman with her children manages to patronize a car where there isa sprinkling of men, because, as is so well known,.there are several degrees of safety attached to traveling when a man is in the car. Whether the Martha Washington Hotel, which is to be exclusively for the use of women, will be a success remains to be seen. The builder thinks thatthere are enough lone women in New York City to make the concern a paying ene, and that a hotel solely set apart for the fair sex would prove a great at-. t-aetion. : eae Perhaps this hotel will. Still, if a woman has been all day working ina store with a crowd of other women, is she likely to wish to continue the ass0ciation in her holiday hours? Is she not more likely to patronize a hotel, if she does live in a hotel, where there is a commingling of the sexes? The truth is that there is no relaxation unless men and women mingle with each other. Human nature is not so peculiarly constituted that man can only flod: pleasure by associating with men. “The Martha Washington Hotel may prove 8 satisfactory investment. Still there are grave doubts whether, asa promoter of the social amenities, the hotel will stand out as a shining mark. ee a oe eo oe oe oe CUBAN RECIPROCITY = OPPOSED BY WOODS. i" San Francisco, March 12 — Congressman S. D. Woods. returned from Washington late last night and today he was busy in his office with a stack of accumulated mail co “I am not yet appointed naval officer of this port,” he said. “The President hag been asked by the California delegation to appoint me to that position but the appointment has not been made. I do not know if it will ever be made. Possibly the President basa dislike for me. Iam opposed to him on the question of Cuban reciprocity and I bave~been most active in that Opposition. My opposition may result in the President naming someone else for the. position. I, however, will never withdraw from the stand I have taken on the Cuban question. Rec'procity with Ouba would result in great injury to the California farmer and I will fight it to the last. The California delegation fought it in the House and in the Senate and my belief is that it will not pass.” << ——— Business Locals. More Riots.
