Old Man Peter Graft Becomes Despondant ; : . ment today. and Takes Strychuine, © Call on Ed Schmidt when you want Peter Oraft,a pioneer resident of the anything inthe tobacco line. tf town of Washington, died at six o’clock last evening from the effects of a dose of strrchnine that he_ had taken an hour and a half earlier with suicidal intent. He was between 75 and 76 years of age and his health had been failing fr some time past. Recently he had expressed himself to numerous acquain’ ances as being tired of life, and had said that as’ he bad no family dependent upon him. and. there would be nobody to mourn his taking off, that the sooner he was in his grave the bettr it would be all around. * Graft lived alone in a cabin just outside of the town, having been a resident of that locality since the early! sixties. A lad discovered him dying’ in bis house late in the afternoon and notified thé people of Washington, but he was so: far gone his life could not be saved. J. A. Lipman, acting as Deputy Coroner, held. an inquest on the remains, with the following jury : Max Getz, W.S. Lavey, J. S. Kramer,O. Helgesen, J. Kelleher, M. Crowley, W. H. Mead, A. Sperns and W. Hogan. Tie jury’s verdict was in accordance with the facts as stated above. A story told bere of the old man is that-many years ago & little girl lost a gold ring ina lot on his ranch. Highteen years later he plowed up the fleld and found the ring, which he promptly restored to its owner who is now the wife of a prominent merchant of this city. ——+2 GOT lS WOOD SAWAD. Bdilor Wadiworth’s Little Joke About Idle Men Brings lis Reward. Editor Wadsworth of the. Herald is the premier ‘*josher” of the Sierra Nevadas. his morning the TRANSCRIPT man started out to find what sailed him when he printed in his paper Sunday that. there. was “not an idle man in town.” Four days before that he had invested part of his wealth in some four-foot wood. It laid in the street, nobody coming along and offering to cut it. Wadsworth sat around in his. new spring suit shivering and thinking the situation. over. Meantime somebody appropriated a good part of the pile, a thing that is likely to happen in Nevada City with any articles which are not nailed down. Finally he wrote out the comment about idle men, then sat back with a chuckle and waited. He didn’: have to waitlong. A crowd of indignant unem ployéd carried his oitice by storm before the papers from the press had been dried by the morning sun. Thus he got a man to cat his wood, and he is happy once more. ‘Here many ways of advertising, but some are better than others. Which is Very True.
