First—Large areas of fertile lands, secur— ed by Government patent, can be purchased at such reasonable tigures that afew hundred dollars is sufficint to.pay for a small farm. Second—The standard fruits grown in this county are the finest cf their varieties grown in the world. They are of a superior flavor and have a firmness of. texture that gives them better shipping and keeping qualities than those grown at lower altitudes and they find a ready market at. remunerative prices. soreness epee Third—The long summers permit of. the rotation of crops, and the raising of two and even three different crops from the same land in # single season. Fourth—There is a ready market for all farm products at good prices. Fitth=-There are excellent means of trans portation to the railway penetrating the central portion.of the county. : Sixth—There is an abundance of timber. Seventh—There is an inexhaustible supply of pure water, both for irrigating and domestic purposes. Eighth—The temperature is mild, both in summer and winter, and is not subject to sudden changes. Fak Ninth—The climate will eompare favorably with that of any other section of the Pacific Coast, even with the most favored, there being no malaria with its resulting chills and fever, no violent winds, no fogs, nor floods. : mate and at this altitude above the sea usually aequire better physical, constitutions, with more plumpness and firmness of museular developmeut as well as color and vitality of the blood_than those reared—in the valley or even coast counties. : With this brief statement of facts, however, let it be understood that we do not elaim for Nevada county that it is a paradise on earth, nor even the popular romance of sub-tropical glories. _ Nevada county lies a little north of the eentral line of California, and contains a population of about 25,000. Itis from twelve to twenty miles wide. The altitude is from two to three thousand feet along its central portion and less than one thousand feet elevation in the western or valley region. The line of the-Central Pacific: Railroad.crosses the eastern boundary, and—traverses the Southern portion. of the county ~for~many . ’ miles. It then enters Placer county, following close to the southern boundary of Nevada county till near its western limit. . The Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad connects with the Central Pacific at Colfax and extends thence north to the central portion of the county, passing through Chicago Park, Grass Valley; and terminating at Nevada City—twenty-two miles from the Central Pacific Overland Railroad. The central portions contain most of the rich gold mines, -including quartz, hydraulic and placer mines together with, the upper portion of the Horticultural belt, while the . western or foothill region consigts exclusive— ly of agrictltural-and grazing lands. The horticultural and agricultural section of the eounty comprises about 250,000 acres of land, a large per centage of which is adapted to cultivation, The. topograpy of the county is such as to give-variety to the pro ducts. We grow successfully in Nevada county: Oranges, lemons, Citrons, figss, olives, apricots, plums, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, hazel nuts, black walnuts, chestnuts, almonds, and every kind of vegetable grown. Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada eounty. There are five daily, one tri-weekly dnd three weekly newspapers published in the county. An ordinance regulating the vending of goods on the streets, games, amusements and other things for which a charge is made, . The Board of Trustees of the City of Nevada do ordain as follows: SECTION I. It shall be unlawful for any person to sell or vend any goods, wares or merchandise upon the public streets of the City of Nevada, or to set up or use for gain an merry-go-round, strikingmachine, phonograph, game or other thing used for amusement, pleasure or other purpose for which a charge is made within the corporate limits of said city without first rocuring a license therefor, as hereinafter requtred. Section II, All persons before engaging in any such’ busihess, amusements or things spoken of in section 1 hereof, snall psy to the City fora license therefor in advance the following sums of money, towit: For merry-gu-rounds, ten dollars per day; tor vendors of géods, wares or merchandise on the public streets, five dollars per day or fifteen dollars per week; for striking-machines five dollars per week or fifteen dollars per month; and for all other things of amusement spoken ofin Section 1 hereof, two dollars per day or ten dollars per week. i SECTION III. Any person engaging in any of said busine or doing and the things herein spoken ot without first procuring the license therefor as herein requfred, is hereby declared to be gui'ty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall be fined ina sum not less than ten dollars ‘nOr more than one hundred dollars, or shall be imprisoned in the city prison for a term not exceeding ten days. .
