If laughter were sold at the @pothecaries, and the price were five dollars a’ bottle, the man who owned the patent would soon have mere money than Rockefeller. Laughter is like water and air and sunshine, It ie one of the most valuable things in the world and something that anyone can obtain free. The fact that it can be bad for nothing makes many overlook it. Don’t fail to epjey a good hearty laugh occasionally. e@ea4@ee eee eae HE OITRUS FRUIT GROWERS of thie!and other States where the J: orange grows ate beginning to realize now what one cent a pound tariff op that frait, for which they worked so hard, means. They thought they knew before; now they know that it means more profits on their productions.. The prices on citrus fruits iu the American market ‘are higher than before, but better profits are being realized, notwithstanding the high freights to the East. “Still we shall have Free-Trade. doetrine to fight again and Be 7 “ fo #4444446 66 A. mHE WAY in which great industrial establishments grow in this treti mendoue country of ours was shown in an interesting way at‘the reeent jubilee celebration by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia om the opcasion of the construction of their twenty. thousandth locomotive. These works were established in 1882 and it took them nearly thirty yeare to build the firet one thousand loconvotives. The second thousand were built in eight yeare and the third in three years. After a time the company began to build a thousand locomotives a year, and now the output considerably exceeds that ~ tim ber; as it amounts to about four locomotives for every working day. a atm Eleven ‘thousand workmen have steady employment and several thousand tons eo of iron and coal are consumed weekly. All this ia the outgrowth of the little establishment which was started in 1832. be . 44 e¢ enna diana HE FOLLOWING CIRCULAR handed to us by Dr. Tickell bas been T recently distributed among the teachers in the public schools of. Providence, R.I.,and similar buat briefer rules will be shortly distributed among the children: : : . _. HEALTH DEPARTMENT. SUGGESTIONS FOR TRE TEACHING OF CLEANLINESS AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN. The polsous of some of the common and also of some of the most loathsome diseases are frequently contained in the mouth. In such cases anything which is mois‘ened by the saliva of the infected person, may, if it touches the lips of another, convey dis@ise. The more direct the contact the greater the danger. It is the purpose of health officials to keep in isolation all persons having communicable disease during the time that they are infectious, but ia mdny cases this is impossible, Little restraint is pat on certain mild diseases, ae measles, whooping-cough, chicken pox and mumps, and even such diseases as diphtheria, soarlet. fever and tuberouldéis are frequently so mild as to be unnoticed, and children affected with them mingle freely with others. It ia probable that in such cases -, One of the chief vehicles of contagion is the secretion of the mouth and nose. It is believed that much can be done to prevent contagion by teaching habits of cleanliness. But if such Inetruction is to be effectual it must be continuous, The teacher must notice and correct violations of those rules as habitustly as the violations of the more ' format school rules are corrected. Even if the question of disease and contagion did not enter into the matter at all the subject ought to be given more attention by teachers, Our schools should not only teach. reading, writing and arithmetic, but it is perhaps quite ag important that tbey sheuld incalcate cleanliness, decenoy, refinement and manners, ‘ ue should be taught for its own sake, health, Oleanliness even if had no relation whatever to St : TEACH THE OHILDREN Not to spit; it is rarely necessary. To epit ona slate, floor, or sidewalk ie an abomination. ; Not to put the fingers into the month. Not to pick the nose, Not to wet the finger with saliva in turning the leaves of beoks, Not to pat pencils inta the mouth er moisten them with the lips. Not.to pat.money in the mouth. Not to put ping in the mouth. Not to put anythiug in the meuth except food and drink,: Not to swap apple cores, candy, chewing gum, half-eaten food, whistles or bean blowers, or anything that is habitually put in the mouth. Teach the ehldren to wash the hands and face often, See that they keep themelean. If a'child is coming down with a communicable dis. ease it is reasonable to believe that there is lese chance of infecting others, if the hands and face are washed clean and not daubed with the secretions of the nose and mouth, Teach the children to turn the faee aside when coughing and sneezing, if they are facing another person. Children should be taught that their bodies are their own private i possessions, that personal cleanliness is a.duty, that the mouth {a for eating and speaking and should not be used ag & pocket, and the lips should not take the place of fingers, , As stated in the TranscerPr of recent issue this State, and in fact all the States are affiicted with many of the infectious diseases that even with strict) quarantine actions fail to be held in check and eradicated. While search for better methods is going on, at least the walfare of cleanliness should be parsued energetically. If uurecognized infection is moving about among us, ‘ ; each of us must learn to protect himself. In diphtheria, tuberculosis and : scarlet fever in its early stages, and doubtless in smallpox, the virus {es con-. tained in the secretions of the nose aud mouth. People should be taught to take care of their own secretions and to avoid contact with the secretions of others, In other worde, they should be taught to be clean. It 1s a curious fact that musical sounds fly farther and are heard at a greater distance than those which are more loud and noisy. If we go on the outside of a town during a fair, at the distance of a mile we hear the instruments, but the din of th tude, which is so Overpowering in the Place, can scarcely be heard, the noise dying on the spot. To those who are conversant with the power of musica] instruments the following observations will be understood: The violins ‘made at Cremona about the year 1600 are musical e multia —— " John Oristo, of Gold Flat, passed away late yesterday afternoon at his home. They were accused of having burglarized the storerooms of Messrs.Van Orden .and Noell. Since the foregoing was put in type we learn that only Brown and Allen paid their fines.
