A late issue of the San Franciseo
Examiner contains a telegram from
New York in reference to the matrimonial ventures of Lionel Lawrence,
&stage manager in that city. It is
said that Lawrenee is a muchly married man, His present notoriety arises
from an action that has been breught
against bim for divorce. The plaintiff is known on the stage as Reata
Winfield Lawrence. Impromptu weddings were a sort of a habit. with Mr,
Lawrence, His friends say that he
won an actress named Dorothy Drew
in this way: There was a partyin a
flat in’ Forty-third street, New York,
with flowers and wine and all the rest
of it. Some obliging member of the
party went out and got a minister and
the ceremony was performed.
It seems that Lawrence was married
six times, Oarrie Rudolph, who was
born and raised in this city, was, it is
said, married to him in Jersey City a
few years ego. The Examiner gives
two cuts of the young lady, one of
which ig in her stage costume.

That Great Blast.
On Sunday next there will bea “big
blow” on the line of the Central Pacific
railroad at Clark Station, in Nevada,
near Wadsworth, The railread company has a great force of men at work
changing the—line of the railroad and
at Clark Station it was necessary to
make a deep cut.:through a mountain.
It was décided. to blow up the monntain, so a tunnel was run into it and
then a great blast was prepared by
which, it is hoped to tear down the
rock and earth. Three carloads of
powder have been placed in position
and the great blast is to be set off next
Sunday morning.
Queen Victoria. —
The peculiar persistency with which
the numeral nine and its multiples, as
well as ninteen, appeared at different
epochs in the life of Queen Victoria is
remarkable. Her majesty was born in
the nineteenth year of the nineteenth
century, and she came to the throne in
the nineteenth year of her age. Her
reign lasted sixty-tbree years, or seven
times nine; and the number of years of
her life was eighty-one, or nine times
nine, The figures of the year of her
birth, 1819, when added tegether give a
total of nineteen, and the figures of
the year of her accession, 1837, give a
similar result. Thirty-six completed
years of the nineteenth century had
expired at her accession, which is four
times nine. This’ strange recurrence
of nine is farther exemplified when it
is stated that her late majesty bad nine

Men and Measures.
During the present session of Con
gress the Saturday Evening Post, of
Philadelphia, will contain bi-weekly
articles om National affairs by the
former Postmaster-General, Honorable Charles Emory Smith. In men
and measures at Washington Mr.
Smith will discuss the great legislative
and diplematic questions of the day,
explaining the news of the week and
giving a clear presentation of nation&l
policies and politics. Mr. Smith’s
long familiarity with public affairs, bis
shrewd political insight and his brilliant literary style combine to make
these papers of unusual interest. The
lighter side of Washington life, the
amusing bappenings, the current gossip end bright sayings are found ina
new department, entitled “A Woman’s
Washington.” These bright letters
are by the author of “The Diary of a
New Congressman’s Wife.”

Deafness Cann ot Be Cured.
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube gets inflamed you have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing,
and when it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this
tube restored to its normal condition,
hearing will be destroyed forever ; nine
case out of ten are caused by catarrh,
which is nothing but an inflamed con.
dition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of deafness (caused by
catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s
