A Few Inducoments Which Nevada
County Offers to Settlers.
First—Large areas-of:fertile lands, secur—
ed by Government patent, can be purchased
at such reasonable figures that afew hundred
: dollars is sufficint to pay for a small farm.
7 Becond—The standard fruits grown in
% this county are the finest. cf their varieties
grown in the world. They are of a superior flavor and havea firmness of texture
that gives them better shipping and keeping
qualities than those grown at lower altitudes
‘and they find a ready market at remunerative prices.
Third—The long summers permit of the
rotation of crops, and the raising of two and
oonenonpven three different crops~ from . the same
_ land in a single season.
Fourth—There is a ready market for all
“ farm products at good prices.
Fifth-There are excellent means of trans
_, tral portion of ‘the county. :
“ Sixth—There is an abundance of timber.
_., Seventh—There is an inexhaustible supply of pure water, both for irrigating and
domestic purposes.
Eighth—The temperature is mild, both in
summer and winter, andisnot subject to
sudden changes.
Ninth—The climate will eompare favorably with that of any other section of the
Pacific Coast, even with the most favored,
there being no malaria with its resulting
ehills and fever, rio violent winds, no fogs,
womebiewnd’ BOF floods, : Z
: Tenth—The children reared in this cli{ usually acquire better physical constitutions, with more plumpness and firmness. of
muscular developmeut as well as color and
vitality of the blood than those reared in
the valley or even coast counties.
With this brief statement of facts, however, let it ba understood that we do not
élaim for Nevada county that itis a paradise on earth, nor even the popular romance
of sub-tropical glories.
Nevada county lies a little north of the
eentral line of California, and contains 4@
population of about 25,000. It extends
from the summit of the Sierra Nevada
mountains, on the east line of the State,
westward a distance of seventy miles to the
Sacramento Valley. It is from twelve to
twenty miles wide. The altitudé is from
two to three thousand feet along its central
portion aud less than one thousand feet elevation in the western or valley region. The
line of the Central Pacific Railroad’ crosses
southern portion of the county for many
miles.—_It-then enters Placer county; follow
ing close to the southern boundary of Nevada county till near its western limit. The
Nevada County Narrow Guage Railroad contp Ka nects with the Central Pacific at Colfax and
i extends thence north to the central portion
of the county, passing through Chicago
Park, Grass. Valley, and terminating at
Nevada City—twenty-two. miles from, the
Central Pacific Overland Railroad. The
central portions contain most of the rich
gold gnines, including quartz, hydraulic and
placer mines together with, the upper. portion of the Horticultural belt, while the
western or foothill region consists éxclusively of agricultural and grazing lands. The
horticultural and agricultural section of the
eounty comprises about 250,000 acres of
. land, a large per centage of which is adapted to cultivation. The topdgrapy of the
county is such as to give variety to the pro
ducts. We grow successfully in Nevada
county: Oranges, lemons, citrons, figss,
olives, apricots, plums, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, hazel nuts, ,
black walouts, chestnuts, almonds, alia
every kind of vegetable grown. ".
Nevada City is the county seat of Nevada
eounty: There are five daily, one tri-weekly and three weekly newspapers published
\ in the county.
