Te "REDUCED ‘cami 4 4 THE ‘TRANSCRIPT. j ing except Published every evening oxoer" BROWN & CALKINS. L. 8. CALKINS. Nn. P. BROWN. WEDNESDAY..MARCH 15, 1899. “GRASS VALLEY NEWS. A Day’s Record of Our Neighbors as Told Over The Telephone, Mal'P. Stone is up from Sacramento, A’son of Wm, Temby has diphtheria. Joseph Shebley of Chicago Park is quite ill. Robert Mitchell retarned today. to San Francisco.A tramp was shipped out of town. today by the officers. Jobn Clemo’s little son has recovered from the diphtheria. The rainfall for twenty-four hours to noon was 2.88 inches, making 2292 for the se .son. : ; Mrs; Sam Harding of Berkeley is here on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. J. R. Tyrrell. Ed Jones of San Francisco has the contract to enlarge and improve the Cabinet hotel. M. H. Argall was elected by the .Board of Education last night as School Census Marshal, Miss Lizzie Gambell of San Franciséo, ‘niece of the late Mrs. William Hamilton, is here visiting Mrs. Charles Miller. In the spring two stores will be built on Main street between the Cabinet hotel ‘and Protection Hose Cumpany’s building. A group of Nevada City young men are expected toenter the lists for one of -the--leading: prizes at the Rathbong Sisters’ masquerade ball Friday evening. Another group is being gotten up here. 2@o -To Pump Up Water. Walter N. Monro went up today to the Shady Creek gravel claim which he has leased. He proposes to put in a gasoline engine to raise water from the pit for washing the gravel in the sluices. He estinjates that: this will be more ‘econofnical than buying water from the ditch. Magnetized Dice. Among the battered flotsam and jetsam that has accumulated in a secondhand store not a great distance from Jackson Square is a shabby round table with a curious secret, and no doubt a still more more curious history. The top was once covered with green billiard cloth, which now is worn to tatters, and disloses a steel plate set in the center and perhaps ten inches square. The whole tep is loose and can be removed, revealing an inpterior.space containing a horseshoe magnet wound with wire, and eonnected with an armature very much like that of an ordinary telegraphic instrument. A close examination shows an insulated wire running down one of the Iégs to a small knob or button, protruding: on the outside. When the top is in place the steel plate rests directly over the magnet.. This strange device in explained clearly enough by it present owner, “It is u dice table,” he said, “on whicha lot of money has been won. When it was in order there was a good-sixed battery inside, connected with the magnet. When the knob on the leg was pressed the ‘eurkent was turned on, and that made the steel plate magnetic. The dice they used with it had small metal-disks on one face, and as long as the.current was on they naturally fell that 6idé down. When the knob was released they would fall any~ way they chancéd t6 come, so all that was necssary for the operator to do was to keep his knee onthe button and he could absélutely control his play.” ‘ ‘ Sick Headaches, The curse of overworked womankind, are quickly and surely cured by Karl’s Clover Root ‘I'ea, the great blood. purifiler and tissue builder. San Francisco, March 15.—The rainstorm which’set in at an éarly hour Lyesterday morning has continued ever sinee almost without interruption, and the prospects are good for a continuance of the downpour for several hours to come. The storm ts general throughout the Sacramento Valley, although it has been rather light on the wes side of the river, : The rainfall has been very heavy in the fothilis where great géod will be done for the stock ranges. .There was a heavy fall ef snow in the mountains along the line of the Central Pacific. During the twenty-four hours ending at one o’clock this morning 24 inches fell at Truckee. There was 38 inches of new snow at the Summit; making 68 in all on the ground, .At other points the average fall of snow was 22 inches. Snow fell as low down as Towle where there was four inches. * : There is general rejoicing all over Califcrnia on account. of the precipitation of rain, as the recent cold and blighting north winds had caused considerable alarm among farmers, orchardists and sto¢k-raiser; The latter are particularly jubilant, for the rain insures an abundance of feed for the stock now running over the almost barren ranges. Two inches of rain fell this morning at Stockton and at’ San Jose.: This afternoon it is coming down as. far south as Santa Barbara. The ‘Famous Cook Retifes. John M. Cook, ‘the héad of the firm which has guided so many travelers about the world, has retired after 55 years of exerien¢e_as a “persunal conductor.” He began as a small boy, guiding 500 children from Leicester on a picnic, and his last feat was’ personally conducting the German Kaiser through Palestine and Syria. He will still remain active head of the firm which his father founded, although he wilkexchange the Pullman sleeping car and the elephant bhowdah for the sedentary ease.of the office chair. Of the Kaiser’s trip he says: “The Emperor asked mé why they were making all this fuss and spoiling Jerusalem with their whitewash and color, Saying distinctly, ‘I wanted to.have seen the city in its natural condition and pot got up like this” ”” eo + 3 The Q. C. Answered. Queen’s Counsel—I insist on’ an answer to my question. You have not told me all the conversation. I-want to know everything that passed between you and Mr. Clapper. Reluctant Witness—I’ve told you everything of any consequence. : “You have told me that you said to him: ‘Clapper this case will get you into court some day.’ Now, what did he say-im reply?” “Well, he suid: ‘Dapper, there isn’t anything in this business’ that I’m ashamed of, and if any snoopin’ Jittle hee-hawin’, four-by-six, gimlet-eyed lawyer, with half a pound of brains and sixteen ounces of jaw, ever wants to know what I’ve been talking to you about, you can tell, him the whole story.’” ee a ee You Try It. Of the’ ten or eleven Nevada City. miners who have been working there ail but five have thrown up their jobs and come home, 2 _}and it is expected the others will quit this week if they have not already .done 80, The mine is owned by Sacramento and Woodland. parties and they are now endeavoring to negotiate a sale of it through a Sacramento real estate agent. The accounts received here indicate that the.compahy.is in financial stress, as the workmen claim to have had difficulty of late in getting their pay. Some of the men say they believe if the company had enough capital to open up the ground properly they would have a good property, but } as things are now running the outlook is discouraging. : In this connection the following articte .from~the Placerville Democrat will be read with interest: “On Wednesday of last week a-rich body of ore was uncovered at the Omo, which assays nineteen dollars per ton. {It is free milling, and‘ fully eighty-five per cent of the assay will be saved. This mine is located in the Grizzly Flat mining district and is numbered among the valuable properties of that section. Twenty men are employed at the mine, and five stamps have recently been added to the mill, making a battery of ten stamps which drop steadily, day‘and night, on good ore. .The main tunnel is in 1,000 feet with 350 feet of backs, and there is at least 30,000 tons of pay.ore blocked out, A bright fature for the Omo mine is an assured fact.” pre ReCR NS SS Sprained an Ankle. Mr. Gage while coming into town today from the Canada Hill gravel mine was thrown into Little Deer Creek by the caving of the bank and received a drenching and a sprained ankle. Will Penrose bappened: along wi h Grissell Brothers’ meat wagon and took him to J. H, Rogers’ house. Decline of Bryanism. Mr, Graves of Georgia, lecturer and orator of repute, who has made an extended tour in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and the Dakotas, is saddened to find that the apostle of the cross of gold is ata discount in those States. Mr. Graves reports on his return home that “the mention of McKinley’s name evokes the wildest'applause from any no such enthusiasm was called forth by Bryan’s name. He is “amazed, and in fact: indignant, .at the comparative apathy with which a tribute to this really great Ainerican is every where received,” and he is convinced that the “silver cause is in definite eclipse” in these sections. In another paragraph Mr. Graves gives the real reason for that deplorable cendition, although he ‘states it as afact, and does not seem to connect it with the “eclipse of silver” and the decline and fall offof Bryan. ~This is jthat “the West is prosperous and happy, ‘its pockets are jingling with gola.” . : “UNION:—HOTEL, lain Street, Nevada City. There isa custom im many parts of Russia for brides to fast on the wedding day until after the sacred ceremony, and this after enduring the hardships ofa “farewell party” given the pday before. As the marriages, to be fashionable, do not occur until evening, it may easily be imagined to what an exhausted state the bride is to commence her new period of life. Besides : bridesmaids there are bridsemen, thése latter being obliged to present the bridesmaids with sweetmeats, A personage follows the processions, bearing an elegantly mounted picture of Christ in gold and silver, which is stationed against the altar. The brides-maids do not all dress alike, and their number ls unlimited.
