Property sold for taxes in the counties will be offered for sale under provision of the statute of 1895. In July the new method of disposing of unredeemed land goes into effect. Formerly land upon which the owner had failed to pay the taxes was sold by the county at the end of.a year to the highest bidder. In 1895 the law in the matter was 80 changed that when the takes-on a piece of land-are unpaid the title Pasa goes to the State. A Daring American Girl’s Remarkable Feat in Alpine Monntaineering. The ascent of the Wetterhorn is a stiff job for a seasoned and muscular man. or a slip of a girl of 22 it is something of a feat. Miss L. L.M. Coote, daughter of the secretary of the National Vigilance association, who has just done this. climb, is “little more than a child,” to use her father’s description to one of our representatives, but already she has given proof of an indomitable spirit and a love for the “hazard of trackless ways.” One of her earliest enterprises, for instance, was a solitary walking tour through Switzerland. It was an uneventful tramp, and it showed the spirit of the girl, and was in a sense the precursor of the more’ serious Py ne taking which she contemplates—a bicycle ride round the world. The Wetterhorn is a dangerous mountain, and has claimed lives before now. Miss. Coote ascended the middle peak of the ridge, known as the Mittelhorn, and rising to a height-of 12,165 feet, This, ‘of caurse, is not her first experience of the Alps, although she has never yet made any remarkable climbs. Once, when moeking the ascent of an easy and familiar peak,’ with a girl friend who was her only companion, they were overtaken by a snowstorm. The girh was not used to climbing, and got dizzy, and, as-usual in such circumstances, wanted to sleep. Miss Coote was fully alive to the danger of such a proceeding, and managed to keep her friend awake until they reached a hut in the mountains. There drowsiness again overtook the girl, and Miss Coote had to renew her efforts, happily successful, to ward off the attack. The incident serves further to illustrate the young woman’s pluck and spirit. Miss Coote’sbieycle trip around the world began September 26. It is admittedly a very langerous enterprise, and Miss Coote is fully aware of its serious uature. The comments which appeared in the Daily Chronicle on Saturday give some idea of its gravity, but Mr. Coote says his daughter will not be deterred.~ “Her ascent of the Wetterhorn gives’ some idea of her pluck,” he remarked to our representative.—London Chronicle. of Appesranées Deceitful. { “T struck a new one the.other day,” said the man who is about to move, “when I went'to see a house of which faithful Irishman was custodian. ‘Too small, too small,’ Isaid, assoonesfsaw the place, “ “Go aisy, sor,’ he replied, ‘till I show yez t’rough.
