Vann and Indian Tom for an assault to murder resembling the methods in some respects used in killing Waller, Sheriff Inlow had little doubt that his deputy had been put on the right track. Evidence will be presented to prove that these two men packed quantities of flour and sugar to the camp of Potts seon after the Chas. Waller, who was murdered in” Fosmurder; the-samehaving been taken» from ter’s Bar township, on June 29, 1893, was an aged, highly respected and est eemed citizyn of that community. He had been employed as a flume tender on the Brown’s Valley irrigation ditch. He was brutally murdered outside his cabin door in that wild and remote part of the county. The two Chinamen who found him dead under his cabin two days after he was murdered reported the matter at Dobbins’ Ranch, and Coroner Bevins was at once notified. He ordered an inquest, Justice of the Peace Owens summoned a jury and they proceeded to where the body had been found. _An examination of the body showed that a bullet had entered his left breast: four inches above the right nipple, the bullet taking a downward. course and coming out under the right shoulder blade. It was proved that his gun had been found in the house and that it had not. been discharged. Strange to say, no boots were found on his feet or in the vicinity of the place where he was murdered. The jury rendered a verdict to the effect that he had been murdered by some person or persons unknown and then the body had been buried in his garden, It was generally reported that Waller wore a belt in which was hid away his money and some checks. His clothes were unbuttoned when his body was found and his pants were drawn down over his hips. As several murders had been committed in the vicinity of Dobbins’ Ranch and had not been traced the residents of that vicinity became greatly alarmed. It_was the general opinion that the deceased had been shot in the daytime because he was in the habit of letting his dog runat night and keeping him tied up in the daytime. When the body was found the dog was tied up and very hungry. _fheriff Inlow and District Attorney McDaniel went to, Dobbins’ Ranch and made -an.investigation but they found it impossi-: ble to secure any evidence that would lead: to.an arrest. Men whispered their suspi+ ‘cions but.not aniota of evidence could be procured. Sheriff Inlow offered a@ reward of $50 for the arrest and conviction of the party or parties committing the crime; the Board of Supervisors offered a reward of $250; the citizens of Dobbins’ Ranch offered $100; Gov. H. H. Markham offered a reward of $300; the citizens of Brown's Valley $100; all the rewards amounted to $800, to! -be paid only on conviction. : « Ibwas ascertained that Waller was alone . at 4:30 on the day the murder was supposed pooks wit By _ to bave been committed as he bad changed the murdered man’s cabin. It will be proved by a witness that ‘‘Scarfaced Dick’’ tuld him that the reason they camped out in the mountains all the time recently was because Mandell Potts had killed a mian. Even this testimony should convince any jury of the guilt of the parties. The bullet with which Waller was killed was not recovered, as the ground where the tragedy took place was of a rocky nature and it.was impossible to discover it: When John Vann and Indian Tom were accused of murdering Waller, after confessing the crime they had been guilty of, they both denied it. ‘Vann stated that Mandell Potts told him, when he was under the influence of liquor, that he had already killed two men and that he was going to kill another; soon after Waller was murdered. Ever since the murder of Waller, Potts and ‘‘Scarfaced Dick” have kept out of Yuba county and have resided on the Nevada county side, Both the men under arrest are desperado’s . > and some Sheriffs would have taken a posse te arrest them, but Sheriff Inlow was satisfied.that he could arrest Potts single handed and he succeeded admirably. “Searfaced Dick” is about 48 years of age and is a full-bleoded Indian. He claims to be an uncle of Mendall Potts, who is‘ahalfbreed. There are four murderers in the county jail at the present time and every precaution should be taken. Sheriff Inlow and-District Attorney McDaniel have worked hard for months on the case and it was at their request that the Appeal refrained from publishing this interesting news concerning the murderers,\ or Hatu’s Harr Renewer is prouounced the} best preparation, made fer thickening the growth of the hair, and restoring that which, following described stock on account o is gray to its original color, . eayt he, ant and ie the tran: ge a will be be he id Raitroad eaat County, MGalitornia. on Wednesday, the 4th Day of April; No, 214 Sacramento r 1894, at 3 P. The Beautiful Sunset Witnessed by > Our People Last Evening.
Residents of this vicinity , were treated last evening to-cns of. those yrand sunset scenes for which: the -mountain portion of California is noted. -: A, slight shower of rain preceded the setting of the sun, and as the orb of day reached ‘the western horizcn the: clouds melted into a thin veil, and through a rift the sui shone forth, illumin ing the thin, floating, vapory substance with a beautiful tint of mipgled pink and gold. _Tie moisture falling-from the clouds . caused a beautiful rainbew, which extended entirely across the heavens, from horizon to horizon, the colors of which* were unusually bright and clear. The dark, heavy clouds in the east looked doubly so, forming a strong background against which the residences on Prospect Hill-and on the_hill above Boulder street stood out in bold relief. The surrounding trees and shrubbery took on the prettiest green that is ever helield by mortal eye and the entire scene was one of those magnificent pictures whfch Nature occasionally displays fdr the edifi‘cation of mankind, but which the skill of the most eminent painters is powerless to reproduce and can but feebly imitate. The effect was like unto an immense cyclorama, with lights a thousand times more radiant and with a richness of coloring infinitely . ff more gorgeous and beautiful, THEATER MONDAY NIGHT.
