The San Francisco Chronicle of Friday Bays: Nevada dounty’ s friends ran the votes in favor of that county for the Chronicle cup, offered for the best-mineral exhibit, up nearly 2000 ahead of El Dorado yesterday in spite of the declaration of the latter county’s admirers that she would head the list again. Hoffmeister of the El Dorado exhibit last evening. ‘‘We have confidence in the merit of our display, and I’ll bet anew. hat that “we will head off Nevada again before the end of the week. We are going to have that cup.” "If the people of Nevada county, who are subscribers to the Examiner and Chronicle, will take the trouble te cut out the coupons and send them to the TransoxrpPt office, it j3 safe to say that we will beat El Dorado by thousands of votes. -s The Best Yet. We received today the first number of the Grass Valley Weekly Union, It is an eight-page paper, and the neatest and prettiest weekly paper ever issued in this State. It is a-credit te Nevada ceunty. It is jockfull of splendid reading matter, and we predict that it will soon havea circulation equal if not excelling that of any weekly published ipthis section of the State, _W. F. John Braid, who is employed at “Naffziger’s butcher shep, while separating two dogs that were fighting this afternoon, was bitten on the right wrist by one of the canines. The brute’s teeth punctured a large vein, from which the blood flowed so profusely that Brand had to seck surgical aid to stop it. One of the dogs belonged to Brand, the other, which is the ene that hit him, is owned by. Colley Bros. *@e Cabin Broken Into. Phil Dunn's cabin, situated on Deer ereek near the Mountaineer mine, was entered by burglars the other day. The door was broken in. Everything in the cabin was turned upside down, but it is not knewn what was stolen, as Dunn has been at Graniteville for some time past, Honorably Discharged. R. G. McCutchan, who was arrested on complaint of Wesley Nichols, for alleged threats, was honorably discharged by Justice Carr, who concluded that there .was nothing in the case, Methodist Church. The County Board of Education met at the office of the County Superintendent of Schools this forenoon. . Present—Baugh, Hussey, Arbogast, Hennessy and Rogers. The following Normal Graduates, who have taught for over two years since graduatiou,; were recommended to the State Board of Education for Normal Documents: MarRutherford and F. L. Arbogast. ‘A Grammar Grade certificate was granted to Mrs. W. D. Long on her San Francisco Normal Class diploma. a A Grammar Grade certificate was issued to Miss W. E. Dedman on her Yuba county certificate, In the matter of recognizing certificates from other counties the following resolution was adopted: ReEsotvep, That the Beard of Education of Nevada county shall not issue certificates of like grade to the holders of certificates granted by any other County Board of Education of California, unless the status of such applicant correspond to that of the holders of certificates of a corresponding grade granted in Nevada county; and no certificate shall be granted without exami‘nation to holders of @ certificate obtained in any other county, unless the Boatd of Education of such county shall isaue certificates in view of those granted in Nevada county. On motion May 23d, 24th and 25th was the time set for holding the Grammar Cetioo! examinations throughout the county,--° Pupils will be examined in reading, spellarithmetic, Grammar, book-keeping physiology, Civil Government, history and writing. Board adjourned to meet May 5th. CHRIST’S ENTRY INTOJERUSALEM The Event Will be Commemorated Throughout the Catholic World. _ Tomorrow is Palm Sunday, the Sabbath before Easter. It is celebrated in the Greek and Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches in commemoration ofthe triumphal entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, (John XII),.on which occasion the multitude cast branches of trees before him. These branches -are represented by sprays of palm, or, in countries where the palm does not grew, by those of other trees, as of the yew, willow, box and fir. These branches are blessed \by the priest and distributed to the congregation, who wear them for the rest of the day. RNASE Will Have to Walk. It looks now as though delegates to the Grand Parlor of Native Sons will many of them have to walk.if they get there. The Parlor convenes at Eureka, Humboldt county, on the 23d of April. There are 400. persons who desire to go, but the steamer which plies between San Francisco and Kureka can only acconimcdate ninety cabin passengers, and it looks doubtful as to providing sufficient means of transportation, If satisfactory arrangements cannot be made the Grand Trustees will probably change the place of meeting. of the Parlor.
