WasHINGTON, March 16.—Secretary Carlisle is a candidate for the Presidential nomination at Chicago and the public anncuncement to that effect will soon be made by one of
the Secretary’s close friends in the Senate. This announcement; however, will not be
made until President Uleveland has formally stated his purpose not to permit his name to
be used in the convention in connection with a third term, It is learned on excellent
authority that the Président has fully decided upon this course and it is expected that he’
will make known his determination within a short time. Although Secretary Olney’s
name has been considered with favor by Democratic leaders; it is known that he does not
desire the nomination, It is undoubtedly trae that Mr, Carlisle’s candidacy will have the
support of Oleveland.and the members of the cabinet, He will go before the convention
as a representative of the ‘‘sound money” views of the administration. His friends in
conducting the canvass for Carlisle’s nomination will urge thatit be laid upon @ ffsound
money” platform and if he be successful at Chicago he will then make this issue prominent
n the campaign leading up to the November eélection,

J. O, Culver, the veteran Postoffice Inspector, has been at Grass Valley for the
‘past two days on business pertaining to
the postal department. He spent last
night in. this city, previous to going to
Bloomfield this morning. When the subject of the postoffice removal from ite present location was broactied to him he. said
that no thought had as yet been given to
the matter, and that when Mr, Carr made
application to move the location of the office the Government would th@h probably
deem it time to take some action in regard to
it,. but not before. Mr. Culver is one of,
if not the oldest, inspectors on the Coast,
and withal is one of the most genial. and
pleasant of men,

Tero ae For It’s Irish, You Know.
Today is the anniversary of the birth of
‘ BENEFIT St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint, and all
over the civilized world the Irish areyoba} ay st serving it with eclat and enthusiasm, In
the larger cities, such as New York and
Chicago, monster parades of Irish societies
occurred and the occasion was observed
much as a general holiday. All around
town today was to be seen people with
some variety or other of green about their
person, Some tempted conspicuity’ by
means of an olive-hued tie, and others,
more modest-like, remained content to allow a small piece of green ribbon to flaunt
from the lapel of the coat. One business
man on Commercial street imbued with patriotism for the ‘ould sod” had his place
decked out profusely with festoons and
folds of green bupting, intermingled with
shamrocks.,

The Carnival of Roses, to take place in
