Lonpon, March 17th—A special from Sunderland says the United States bas purchased a torpedo boat destroyer from a man named Doxford. Say It Was Accidental. Spanish commission investigating the Maine disaster is not yet announced, but several of the technical officers.employed say the explosion was due to internal accident. Should the American commission decide the explosion was external and indemnity be demanded, the demand would be indignantly repelled. Bought a Cruiser. Roms, March 17.—The Italian Goyernment has sold the armed cruiser Varez to Spain. SEY Found Dead at Downieville. An old Frenchman known as Antone many years was found dead Tuesday near his cabin which stands not far from the upper bridge. He had evidently fallen over the bank. His body was at the edge of the-stream, his feet and legs being in the water up to the knees. It is not known whether the fall from the bank killed him;Some think he was simply stunned by the fall and afterwards perished from exposure. The present owners are Col. Tozer, Chas. D. Lane and others. They bonded the property some time ago to a New York syndicate represented by Dana Harmon, the reported price being $50,000. The bond was to have expired on the 10th instant, but an extension to the 1st of April has been obtained. Under the superintendency of Mr. . Harmon there has been somewhat like $100,000 expended in opening up the property, and the operations have been attended with the best of results. A magnificent mine has been developed. The ore deposit is very large and of good quality. It is expected that in the Spring thirty more stamps will be added to the ten now in use. «+ Mr. Thomas, who is interested in the sale, is expected here tonight from San Francisco and tomorrow he will go up to make a careful inspection of the mine. The Teachers Institute. The County Teachers Institute will be held at Truckee this year, beginning Monday, May 2d. From 75 to 80 teachers will go up and remainall the week.
