A year or so ago several men
were sent to the county jail from
Truckee for offenses of a serious
character, and upon protest being
‘raised at this end of the county
5 poor paying the officers for their
services we contended that such
talk was unjust and unreasonable.
But recently some tramps (seven
in number):-were taken before a
justice there on. a trivial charge
and ordered imprisoned; whereupon we suggested that a bill of
costs should not be piled up against
the county on such a slight pretext, Thé Tidings now pretends:
to discover a remarkable revolution of sentiment in the TransckipT regarding Truckee criminal
}matters. The discovery is not a
genuine one. What was wrong a
year ago in the Truckee officers is
wrong now ; but the fact that they
ate wrong now is no sign that they
were not right then.

Drift Mine Sold.
The Placer County Republican
near Iowa Hill, was sold a few
days since for $100,000 to Adolph
Weske,; who immediately transferred it to a French company for
$200,000. The mine has been
worked a great many years, and
at present has the appearance of
being far from exhausted. In 1882
there had been taken out of it
been paying richly. Those who are
conversant with mining matters
say that prospects in the vicinity. . W

Mabel Gray Comes Back.

once strong constitution having
finally succumbed to the demoralizing influences of mixed drinks
as dispensed at Truckee. Kindly.
care and the balmy climate of this
part of the county. may give her a
few weeks or months of respite
from the Grim Destroyer, but she
doesn’t seem long for this world
