I have often seen really Jong headed men, when they have to makeup their minds about some weighty business, set about it by considering two or three cases that are most likely to happen and* come to a decision on the assumption that one of these cases is ‘gute to come. This is dangerous, for often and usually there arises some third or fourth case which had been overlooked and which your decision will not fit. You had much better, therefore, keep your decision ‘s rictly to what the actual necessity of the matter compels. =-John Morley in Nineteenth Century. On last Tuesday afternoon two masked highwaymen stopped‘a teamster on the road-between Iowa Hill'and Colfax, in Placer county. The teamster is employed by the Urser-Major Supply Company at Iowa Hill. The robbers, who were armed with rifles and who wore masks made of red bandana handkerchiefs, secured $48 from the teamster, $40 of it being the teamster’s own money, representing « month’s wages. It is believed that the robbers intended tohold up the stage running between Iowa Hill and Colfax, and which brought down considerable treasure from the former place on Tuesday. The treasure was so valuable that a shotgun messenger was sent along to guard it, and the probabilities are that when the robbers saw him sitting on the box with his sawed-off shotgun, ready for business, they got cold feet and turned their attention to the unarmed teamster. Sheriff Conroy and some of his deputies are out scouting through. the moun hunting for the robbers. Millionaires in the Cabinet. There are six millionares in the President’s cabinet. Secretary Long bas a'private fortune of $1,400,000. Cornelius Bliss, Secretary of the Interior, is worth $1,250,000. John Sherman, Secretary of State and Lyman J. Gage, Secretary of the Treasury, are each rated at $1,600,000. Postmaster-General Gary has a fortune estimated at $2,000,000. R. A. Alger, Secretary of War, heads the list with a fortune of not less than $5,000,000. . THE NARROWS DAM. A Vertical Shaft Boing Sunk Above High Water Mark. The Smartsville correspondent of the Marysville Appeal says that the Government work on the dam site is being prosecuted with renewed vigor. A force of men are engaged and will in all probability uninterruptedly prow.ceed until the desired purpose is accomplished, which for the present is to ascertain the depth of the gravel in the Yuba river at the above location. A @ertical shaft is being sunk above. high water mark, and when the required depth is reached a tunnel will be driven toward and under the river bed until the gravel is tapped. This will give the engineers a true basis on which to form a fair estimate of the amount of material, labor and capital that is necessary for the construction . of the proposed restraining debris dam, RD FOES AE RS His Big Bills.
