Published a erry eet eihere we Sundays and jays by. BROWN & CALKINS. N. Pp. BROWER. UG. 8. CALKINS. Kntered at the Postoffice at Nevada City as econd-class matter. TRLEPHONE No. 4. FRIDAY..... MARCH 18, 1898. aaa a SAN FRANCISCO’S DANGER, According to the San Francisco Daily Report a fleet could tie off the Ocean Beach or Cliff House, out of the fire line of any guns the city has now, or is likely to:have for a considerable time, andtoss shells into the city at will. That is why the Government purchased in such. hot haste, several years years ago, that high-lying tract at the southwesterly end of the City Cometry; and also decided, more recently; that heavy guns would have to be mounted in works on the shore about a mile below the Ocean Side House. The two works would cover the now uncovered sea line from the southerly head of the Golden Gate to a point several miles below the Cliff House. Without them the city is not sufe, unless its présent’ forts be well “ ‘supplemented by war ships. This isa point that shonld be impressed on our Congressional delegation, in order that a portion of that $50,000,000 appropriation may “be applied promptly and PROTECTION THAT PAYS. His chubby chéeks are rosy; and he appears to be extravagantly well, starched with dried preserves. ‘*Why, he’s a. splendid.child,’’ says the doctor. ‘‘Stand him on the floor.’’ The mother obeys. The child falls, “Once more, pleasé."’ The child falls again. **Once more.’’ Third attempt, followed by the third fall of the sick boy. ' ; The doctor is thoughtful, ‘*Unheard of!’? He-says to the boy, whose mother holds him up'by the arms; *‘Tell‘me; my fine little fellow, have you a pain any where?’’ No, sir. b BT ** Does ur head ache?”’ -*No, ‘Did you sleep well last night?” se Yes, sir.’? , ‘Have you any appetite now? waald you like a little soup?’ *€Oh, yes, sir’? “Bxactly, ” and the doctor adds with an air of authority, ‘‘He has patalysis;’’ The mother cries: ‘‘Paral— «© She raises ber-bands toward accurate as those in which it was in-. heaven, and the boy falls. sisted that it could not produce suffi‘*Yes, madam. NEBRASKA’ ‘ALL ‘RIGHT. The people of Mr. Bryan’s State have reduced their mortgage indebtedness about seven million dollars in the past year, despite the fact that free coinage of silver was not adopted in 1896. The farm mortgages released during the year amounted to $14,767,000; and the now mortgage filed, $11,844,000, while in the cities the mortgages filed during te last six months of 1897 were $1,890, 0230 and those released $4,245,000. Assuming that the work of the first six months of 1897 in the cities was as satisfactory as that of the last half ‘of the year the reduction in mortgages in Nebraska would amount’ to between seven and eight million dollars.
