Assistant Attorney-General CO. N. Post

find some law that would justify further prosecution of the lynching cages,
but they were forced to the conclusion
that it would be a-useless waste of time

State’s attorneys that another trial
would result in the same way even if a
jury could be found in Modoc Ceunty.

Minisier Assaulted.
Exvasetu, N. J., March 17—An attempt was made to.kill the Rev. Mr.
Houst; pastor of the German Lutheran
Church ef this place, last night. The
police believe that the would-be assassins were Italian anarchists, After
the shooting of President McKinley
Mr. Houst preached a sermon in which
he denounced the anarchists and declared that they should be driveu from
the country. On November 27th last
his son mysteriously disappeared,
and the minister subsequently received threatening letters, in which it
was said that the boy was in hell and
that the. father also would be sent
there. Some weeks ago hie little
daughter was met on the street by a
young man, who tried to entice her
into a house, but she began to cry, attracting the attention of passersby,
and the man took fright and harried
away. Last night Mr. Houst heard
steps on the porch of his home and he
went out to investigate. As he did so,
he was knocked down by a blow on
the head with a blunt instrument
While he was prostrate his assailant
drovea knife into his chest, inflicting
a flesh wound. The wound on the
head is considered serieus.

Brain-Food Nonsense !
Another ridiculous food fad has been
branded by the most competent authorities. They have dispelled “the silly
notion that one kind of food is needed
for brain, another for muscles, and stil!
another for bones. A correct diet will
not only nourish a particular part of
the body, but it will sustain every
other part. Yet, however good your
food may be, its nutriment is destroyed
by indigestion or dyspepsia. You must
prepare for their appearance or prevent their coming by taking regular
doses uf Green’s August Flower, the
favorite medicine of the healthy millions. A few doses aids digestion, stimulates the liver to healthy action, purifles the blood, and makes you feel
buoyant and vigorous. You can get

‘A Large Loss.
Puitapatpnia, March 17—The loss
resulting from the fireat Bryn Mawn
College lest night will be much greater
than was at first supposed, Denbigh
Hall, the finest of the college buildings,
which was erected at a cost of $190,000,
was entirely destroyed, and its contents, valued at $35,000 at least, were
consumed, Seventy young women occapled chambers in Denbigh Hall and
their individual losses have not ye
been learned. Miss Thomas, President of the College, said today during
the progress of the fire there had been
some. looting by strange men, but ad
ded that the thefts of jewels, etc , were
not extensive. Denbigh Hall was
erected in 1891. According to location,
tuition, board and residence in this
building, cost the student from $400 te
$575. President Thomas is fearful
that the offer of $250,000 by Jobn D.
Rockfeller, conditioned on an equal
amount being raised, will be endangered, as the college will have hard work
to recover from the effects of the fire.
