It is said that Russian military authorities believe such a struggle inevitable and that Russia is strengthening the defences of the Baltic coas the authority of a prominent Russian official that an attack t. by his country on India is imminent. This is probably all bosh. In this case the wish is un‘doubedly father to the thought. Germans have no great love for the English and certainly are envious of their commercial prestige and would not object to seeing it lessened. When the present Emperor ascended the throne the wha t that time England was far in the lead of any other power in the world in a commercial way and Germany’s ambition to become its rival seemed almost ridiculous. mats, undiscouraged by the great gap between the two nations, persevered, adopted every possible method that could increase their commerce and widened their markets with the result that after twenty years their goal had been almost reached. England was still the commercial superior, but was being closely pressed by Germany-and in some. parts-of the world actually surpassed by that country. The Germans are not yet satisfied and hope to attain the foremost position as a Hence they would not be sorry to see England involved in a war which would certainly prove a heavy drain on the national treasury and might even result German policy of commercial commercial nation. enterprise came into life. in the loss of colonial possessions. It is not, however, at all probable that England will be forced into any such struggle or from present appearances that Russia will be at all anxious to undertake another war The Japanese are giving the Czar far more trouble than he anticipated and Russia will be a good many million rubles poorer when peace is declared. With England reluctant and Russia not eager the danger of in the immediate future, a war between the two nation s is not great. 474737 2 DP DF TEACH HOME MAKING HE State University is doing something to educate women as home. makers. lecturer on household topics in farmers’ institutes, It would be well if this were a step toward general instruction of like character in the University and other schools of the State.
