-EXCELS IN BEAUTY.
THE PAN-AMERICAN EXPOSITION CITY
1 piiment
NEVADA’ CITY, CAL TUESDAY EVENING, MARCH 19,‘ tg0r. EST. IN 1860 BY N. P. BROWN & CO,
OF PALACES.
A Harmony. of Architectural, Sculptural, Horticultural, Floral, Hlec¢rical and Color Effects—Progress
of a Century to Be Illustrated.
The Pan-American may not be ap big
as some former expositions, but it will
be more beautiful than any of them,
The Exposition site is a commanding
one, containing 350 acres adjoining
Buffalo’s lovely and. expansive Dela‘
ware Park. In selecting the Spanish
Renaissance style of architecture as a
basis for the Exposition architects to
work upon, the managers paid a comto the Latin-American
countries and at the same time provided for an effect of surpassing gran-.
deur. .-The style has been somewhat
modernized in its treatment, with the
result of enhanced beauty. Color is
jndiciously applied to relieve the staff
covered structures of the blank monotony which has characterized former
exposition cities, It is rich, charming,
restful to the eye—the very perfection
of color decoration of buildings. The
prismatic splendor has evoked the
term “Rainbow City” for the ensemble
of Exposition palaces. Sculpture will
add to the attractiveness, Majestic
ple living within a night’s ride of the
‘Pan-American Exposition, and a great
‘ elr with the progress or the
countries of the western hemisphere,
and the new possessions of the United
States. To show the achievements
during the century just closed and
make for more rapid progress in the
future is the chief purpose. In’ order
to realize the ideal in mind the various
countries must be drawn into closer relations commercially and socially. The
golden opportunity comes with this Exposition when the representative men
of all the countries in question will be
gathered together and the diversified
resources of the continent displayed. .
Such an international congress of
ples, exhibits and ideas must needs de.
velop much of good for the inhabitants
of the continent and posterity. It offers the chance for better acquaintance,
the acquirement of new and useful
knowledge, a comprehension of each
other’s opportunities. and necessities,
the settlement of questions which have
too long retarded international trade in
Pan-America and the laying of a
strong and enduring foundation for an
intercourse which will be mutually
beneficial.
There are more than 40,000,000 peoattendance, possibly exceeding that at
the Columbian Exposition, is confidently expected. The hopes of the managers are for more than 25,000,000 paid
admissions. Exvsert L. Lewia.

the Exposition City, the work of the
best sculptors of the country, under the
direction of Karl Bitter.
The court settings will be superb,
The principal courts are the Court
of Fountains and Plaza, which form
a north and south perpendicular and
connect with a transverse court called
the Esplanade. :
Surrounding the main group of buildings and bordered with a double row of
trees and grassy bapks is.a broad and
stately canal more than a‘mile long.
In perfect harmony with the grandeur and beauty of the buildings and
courts will be the horticultural and
floral embellishments of the grounds.
Rising high above al} the other structures on the Exposition grounds the
Electric Tower is the first object to arrest the attention of visitors. It is 391
feet high. The. base is 80 feet square
to a height of 200 feet. This base is
flanked on the east and west sides by
colonnades 75 feet in height, semictreular in form, which curve toward the
south, forming a clasp setting for the
great basin of the Biectrical Fountains,
From the fountains to the Goddess of
Light at the apex the Tower will be
one’ mass of quiet beauty by day and
of fiery, sparkling grandeur by night.
Elevators will take visitors to the restaurants upon the colonnade, where
they will have a commanding view of
the broad and beautiful Court of Fountains.
The electrical display will be far saperior to any yet attempted.
These are the principal features
which will excel.all former attempts
of the kind and serve to make the PanAmerican Exposition City the most
beautiful spectacle ‘ever prepared by
the genius of man for a similar enterThe Pan-American Exposition . conNOTICE.

Both Were Surprised,
The third time I changed cars at-the
Hornelisville. Union railroad station
and lunched at the little grillroom just
up the street the jolly little proprietor
recognized me as a regular patron and
did his best to entertain me while my
special pot of coffee was coming to a
boil.
“Notice that fellow who just went
out?” he asked, chuckling contentedly
to himself.
I hadn’t noticed particularly, but I
knew it would be disconcerting to admit, so I nodded-e:Bouragingly, says &
writer in the New York Herald.
“Well,” he continued, “that’s Jim
Smith—Long Jim Smith they call
him—conductor of the Erie, and, say,
he’s laying for me. Greatest practical
joker you ever saw. Always getting
rigs on me, and I never could get back
on him until last week, and then I waa
about as much surprised aa he was.
“I was coming down the street and
saw a crowd gathered around some Sal
vation Army singers. Long Jim was)
awey on the edge of the crowd, standing of his-tiptoes so he could see over
the heads of the. rest. He had his
back to me, and, sticking out from under his arm, was a big bag of lemons!
I saw my chance, and I sneaked quietly. behind him, hauled off and gave
that bag of lemons an awful swipe
with my cane.”
Here the little man went off into an
uncontrollable fit of laughter over the
remembrance.
He laughed till his sides shook and
tears ran down his face. I waited till
he had quieted down.
“Well?’ I queried. “Scattered the
lemons all about, I suppose?”
“Scattered! Ho, ho, ho! He! Hi,
hi, hil. He! Hum! Well, I should say
so. But they wasn’t lemons; they was
eggs.”
