Ooi ue who had abode with his wife for years and years, had a little quarrel with her, and he straightway took up his bed and went out of the house and made it again under a tree, and swore with a violent swear that he would never sleep in the house where his wifé was again, And his wife smole'a fiendish smile, and locked the doors and fastened the windows, so that burglars might not break in and steal her, and went to bed and dreamed sweetly, And it came to pass that the nights waxed cold and shivery, and the man under the tree began to murmur and’ utter complainings, &hd rheumati¢ symptoms began to. sprout in his bones, so that he was driven ask his wife to take him in and not let him die, : : But his wife refused. She spoke through the keyhole, calmly and dispassionately, and said that whereas he had made _ himself a bed under a tree he should lie in it, ete. And _ he went back and froze until -morning and spent the day thinking up a scheme, and he remembered that his wife was very much afraid ‘of fire, And when, in the silent watches of the night, his obdurate wife lay sweetly snoozing, he hammered loudly on the door of his house, and: raised up his voiced and cried : “Fire! Fire! Get up, Mary! Fire! Fire!! FIRE!!! For God’s sake, Mary, get up! The house is afire! arine ! AFIRE . ” And Mary got up and screamed, and the neighbors got up and screamed, and the dogs barked, and somebody rang the bell on their blankets and feather beds and pitched their mirrora and pictures into. the street, and then Mary opened the door and asked : ‘‘Where is it? O, where is it?” But the old man just rushed into the house and hopped into the warm bed and snuggled down comfortably, and said he’d be darned if ‘he knew where it was; they could hunt for it. And unto this day there are people here who look upon that man with suspicion, eee STOOD THE TEST. A. New Cannon With’ Which the French Have Experimented. CUTTER GAME BILL. It Makes Distinctions in Favor of a Favored Class. The Fresno Republican says: In a State where population is increasing and game is proportionately decreasing it is manifestly appropriate that laws should be adopted for the protection of the latter. This is. the meritorious ebject of the Cutter game bill, Hi which is now before the Legislature. It appears that in attempting to attain this excellent end an unintentional injustice will be done by the bill. Under the terms of the measure, for instance, deer meat may not at any time be bought or sold in the State. The animals may, however, be killed inthe three months between July 15th and October 15th of each year. Now observe the practical operation of such a law. The poor resident on the vallefs or the seashore (and here~is where most Walifornians live) can never’ taste of deer’s flesh except by rarest chance, The man who has wealth and can spare time from labor may, during. three months of the year, get out in the mountains, shoot, eat and supply his friends to his heart’s content. Herein the bill distinguishes in favor of an already favored class and against the masses ofmen, ~ Again, duck, quail, etc., may be shot from October 15th to January 15th of each year, J but they may be bought and sold only between November 15th and January 15th, This is a two months’ difference in favor of the men who can afford to get out and shoot and their friends, Rati Why should these distinctions be made ? If game needs protection (and it does) let the time be limited as may be deemed advisable, but while it is shot let it be for all men; let} us have no legal snaps for ‘‘gentlemen sportsmen,” one of whom has said that “God made the game for sport, and not for food.”” Limit the time of killing deer to’one month, to fifteen days or ten days, if so it is considered best, but let there be no hindrance to all men who will in buying and eating venison during that time, The Magic Touch OF Hood’s Sarsaparilla You smile at the idea But if you suffer from Dyspepsia And Indigestion, try a bottle, ‘and before you have taken half a ozen doses, you will involuntarily think, and no doubt exclaim, “That Just Hits It!” ᠠ᠀ That soothing effect is a magic touch!” Hood's Sarsaparilla gently tones and strengthens the stomach and digestive organs, invigorates the liver, creates'a natura H healthy desire for food, gives refreshing sleep, and in snort, raises the health tone of the entire system.
