FUNSTON’S CAREER Strange Adventures of a Remarkable Young Soldier. . WE 18 NOW FIGHTING AT MANILA. He Has Fought Indians, Suffered In* Death Valley, Explored Alaska, Tried to Make Money In Mexico, Been a Railroad Man, Bled For Cuba Libre and Was Condemned to Die. Colonel Frederick Funston, who led , * . the three companies of the Kansas regiment in their gallant charge against ‘}the Filipinos the other day, is one of, “ he youngest colonels in the United States army. He is 28 years old. Colonel Funston was born in Kansas and is the sén of an ex-congressman. from that etate. He was graduated from the State university of Kansas and then became a newspaper man at Fort Smith, Ark. ‘While there he saw hard fighting during the Indian outbreaks, joining the troops on several occasions and remaining with them through a winter tampaign. After leaving Fort Smith he joined a government expedition to Death valley, in. southern California, sent out to make a geological investigation. Death valley is said to be the . most desolate waste in this country. 1The expedition suffered every kind of privation for nine months, in which time Colonel Funston took the record of the highest temperature ever measured for any government, which was 165 degrees F. Returning from this expedition he took a commission from the government to explore Alaska, and for two years he wandered about there alone. After a rest of several mcnths he went to Mexico and Central America on a private venture, it being his object to get options on land for coffee plantations. The project needed more financial support than he could secure in*the west, and for this reason he visited New York The support, however, was not forthcoming, and Funston: became assistant secretary for the Topeka and Santa Fe railroad. The routine of this post was monotonous to him, and three months later he surprised his friends by enlisting as a private in the Cuban army. His promotion in that service was rapid. Soon he was made lieutenant, then captain, then major, and finally he was put in command of all the artillery force east of Havana. During the 18 months he spent in Cuba he was in 28 battles, had his left arm mutilated by a shell, rebullet in his leftung, and was of the fever for “two months. Once while leading a battery to a point of vantage he had his horse shot under him. The horse rolled. on Funston’s right leg, crushing the thigh. His campaigning had by this time rendered him a physical-wreck, and not feeling able to continue in the service he asked to be retired. His request was granted. On the way to the coast, however, he was captured by the Spanish. He was. condemned to die, but later, being put on parole, escaped and came to New York. When the war was declared against Spain he was commissioned by Governor Leedy of Kansas as colonel of the
Twentieth Kansas regiment. Later General Miles sent for him to take a place on his staff. Colonel Funston.insisted on keepfng his regiment, but he spent several weeks with General Miles at Tampa, giving him the benefit of his knowledge of €uba. His regiment was stationed at San Francisco for two months. Six weeks before it sailed for Manila the colonel met a beautiful woman of high social positionin Oakland, whom he married the day the transport sailed for the Philippines. Colonel Funston arrived in Manila with his regiment on Dec. 9. Most of the officers are. graduates of the Kansas State university. The colonel is a short man with broad shoulders, cs ONE.OF THE MANILA HEROES. Major J. Franklin Bell and His Servfees to General Otis. A large share of the credit for the preparations made at Manila to withatand a native attack and the successful manner’ in which General Otis has followed up his advantage is due to the work of Major J. Franklin Bell, chief of the bureau of military information. Bell is an old cavalry officer of ripe western experience and was chosen for his rough work on account of his fitness for its exactions. During the American operations against the Spanish he made a series of tours about the city of Manila, and his fearlessness won & recommendation for a medal of honor. After the entry into the city Bell extended his investigations, and his reAgents for some of the best Fire. and Life Insurance. ports placed General Otis in a position te campaign intelligently and successfully anywhere in the middle portion of Luzon. He examined roads, passes and fords, and under his direction elaborate mips were prepared. He also visited every native stronghold and gave his chief accurate reports as to position and strength. He worked fearlessly and $1500—A ranch of six acres nvar Nevada City. Good dwelliriz and outunceasingly. Tiere are 80 flag factories in the “United States, of which more than onehalf are in the state of New York and have an ,invested capital of $600,000 and pay, in wages nearly $200,000 a year. Many other flags than those used 4or patriotic decoration or display are ‘made in this country. There are the railroad flags, of Which enormous humbers are in use. These signal flags come in two sizes—-18 by 20 inches and 18 by 24 inches. There are, it is said, more red than green signal flags and more green than white. Other cheap flags in general use are for yachts, for use’ by contractors and railroad builders, for steamship and auctioneers and for.soa great cosmopolitan population, especially in the large cities, it is no unusual thing in times of celebration or. festivity to see flags.of foreign countries. dieplayed—foreign flags of American make.
