THURSDAY.... MARCH 2, 1899 caiman : ished vening except Eoviove seal Legal Holidays by BROWN & CALKINS. N. P. BROWN. L. 8. CALKINS. A MAD EDITOR. He Falls Out With an Old Nevada City Man. ee In the language of the street, the editor of the Reno Journal is not doing a thing to our esteemed ex-fellow citizen, Senator Stewart of the State of Nevada. In last fall’s campaign the Journal whooped things up for the cause of Republicanism and circulated lots of extra copies all over the State. After election it sent a bill to thé Senator for the papers, but he said he had . sult. WILL NOT TALK. Two juries bad unanimously given verdicts for the plaintiffs for the amount claimed, but Stewart’s attorneys appealed the case to the District Court and won it on a technicality which the iuost miserable pettifugger in the country would seorn to resortto. And this is the man whom the Legislature— Lat, thank God, not the people—elected United States Senator! A man who would_resort-to such a contemptible subterfuge to avoid the payment of an honest debt would plead the statutes of limitation on a washer-woman’s bill, or pilfer the coppers off a dead darkey’s eyes. He is unworthy the recognition even of the scalawags he bribed to vote for him, who next to himself are probably the lowest specimens of humanity that ever affiicted the world with their presence.” _+ ome + — Visalia ‘Times: The peculiar thing about the whole Senatorial situation is the viciousness with which Burns is assailed by the very men who have heretofore taken his orders without protest. A few years ago when there was a rebellion in the Republican ranks in San Francisco the firm of Burns & Spreckels was organized, and for a campaign this pair of bosses purified things. QS ee eS somes It is said that John. Wanamaker spends $395,000 a year in advertising his New York:store. These figures are stupenduous, but he 1s not only the largest but the °*most acute advertiser in the world. He has the science of it down to a very fine point. A Wanamaker ad, is always about the most readable thing in the paper in which it appears. : ae a, Milton Green, Grant’s manager, will go before the bar of the. house tomorrow, but he gives notice that he will answer no questions. The Republicans did not hold a caucus today. A Parlor Set by Mail. The postoffice authorities of Wasbington are trying to. suppress a concern which advertises a parlor furniture set for $1, which proves to be a worthless toy set. The advertisement state that it is a mjniature set of three elegant pieces of furniture, wpholstered with plush, of any color desired, with handsome carved metal finish, ete., and gives an accurate picture of two chairs and a sofa. The set comes by mail in a paste: beard box 4x4 inches, aud is exactly like the illustration, which is in reality nearly actual size. ‘The framework is of pewter and the upholstering. cotton ‘plush. The authorities are puzzled as to how to operate against these people, as the wording of the advertisement is a fairly accurate description of,the articles, and technically they are not misrepresenting their goods. A Good Saloon Town. A gentleman who recently returned from a trip to Shasta county informs an exchange that Reddiug is lacking somewhat of its customary vigor at the present time and that Keswick is a booming place by reputation only. He found that the latter place, a town of less than 3000 inhabitants, possessed 23 saloons. The number is not maximum, as two drinking places have recently closed their doors. ens OBE ES Knocked Down by a Policeman. She was nearly ninety years of age. Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Black and Mrs. Mary. Lombard, who have been at North Bloomfield to attend the funeral of their mother, were here last evening on their way back to San Francisco. Mrs. Lombard will return soon to her home in Indiana. <. PARIS BEAUTY SHOW. _ Three Fair Americans Are Said to >» Have Entered. The United States will have several representatives at the international beauty show which is to be held in Paris at the end of March. ‘The secretary of the show says that three American women — Mrs. De la Mar, Mrs. George: Law of New York and Mrs. Collins of Boston—hnave accepted invitations to compete for the beauty prize. Mrs. De Ja Mar was considered among the handsomest women in America when she married the venerablé western Creesus who recently obtained a divorce from her. She is only 23 years of age now and is admired for a willowy, delicate style of beauty. Mrs. Collins is more matronly. Mrs. Law is a brunette, vivacious, fascinating and very young. As the jury includes painters, sculptors, poets, dress designers, with Sarah Bernhardt as president, the verdict ought to do justice to the different types of beauty. Bernhardt said to the New York Journal correspondent: ‘‘The contest practically over, so faras the State at large is concerned. More Troops To Go to Manila.
