THE TRUTH COMING OUT.
HE members of the Aesembly committee are beginning to realize that
there are two sides to the prison punishment question. It will be
well also if they realize that the agitation can be given such a tarp
as to disturb prison discipline for years tocomg. Even now there. are indications that the more turbulent element among the convicts are ripe for a revolt.
A single ill advised step may cause very serious trouble. The loose talk and
impradent actions of « Prison Director caused what is known as the “bread
riot” at San Quentin during the administration of Warded Shirley. However,
it is evident from the tenor of the interviews given out by the members of the
com mittee since their recent visit to San Quentin that the story of the troubles
first given ouf is far from stating the case correctly or even approximately.
The Examiner correspondent quotes one of thems’; as saying:
“We found San Quentin in better condition than we had been led to expect by the reports of the regular committees, and we have no reason to be-=
lieve that @ ‘clean house’ had been arranged for our inspection. ‘The Warden
allowed us to go where we pleased and to interview anyone we desired. We
examined the convicts singly and in executive session, none of the attaches
being present, and each witness was assured that.he could speak ‘freely without
. danger of. being punished for saying things the officers might not like. To
our surprise most of the prisoners declared that Aguirre was a just and reasonable humane warden and that he was ready to hear any complaint they had
to make. By the ase of thie straight jacket, they eaid, he had eompletely eradicated the opium évil, and one prisoner who bas spent twenty-five years in the
institution asserted that during all that time the discipline had never been so
good asitisat present.” = . .
eee eeeeresene eremerbes
If the records, inside and outside the prisons, of‘ the convicts who bave
made the most damaging accusations against the officials could be laid before
the pablic in detail it would materially facilitate a clear understanding ef the
situstion. In the end it will probably be found that the better behaved and
more self-respecting class of prisoners have no particular complaint to: make
(while all the really grave charges emanate from the incorrigible element and
their abettors among the San Francisco “push.” Good people should be chary
of accepting unverified tales of prison tortures, especially those coming from

Deadly Gases Overcome
One and Another Has
a Close Call
ee ee Me
Word was received at this city last
evening of a fatality which occurred at
Dr. Pesheck’s mine on Bear river,
about a mile and a half from You Bet
Station, whereby one miner lost his
life and another narrowly escaped the
same fate,
The ledge is reached by tannel which
runs in a distance of 800 feet, thence
by a perpendicular shaft 600 feet in
depth. At the bottom of this shaft
two men were engaged in drilling
a hole—Vincent Bargonoli and John
Bracelin, both of this city, They were
on the day shift and this was their lact
hole before quitting time. When ready
for powder Bargonoli ascended _ the
shaft to procare the charges which
were kept stored in the tunnel, On
arriving at the mouth he was met by
such a dense volume of amoke and
poisonous gases that forced him to try
and escape it. He attempted to reach
the month of the tannel, but the deadly fumes were too much for him and
he stagged and fell forward on his face
in the muddy slimes «hich usually
trickles alongside the track in most
mines, .
Upon his partner failing to appear
with the caps and powder Bracelin
became alarmed, for he then fer the
firet time remembered that they had a
sbort while before heard a strange
rumbling sound, as of distant thunder
emenating fromabove. Becoming now
thoroughly frightened he hastened to
the mouth of the hole, but he, too, encountered the over-powering fumes.
Quickly realizing that unless be could
reach the open air he was-a-dead man
Bracelio made a dash for the mouth of
the tunnel. When -witbin 100 feet of it
be, too, was overcome, and he sank
stupefied to the ground,Just at this critical period the night
smoke and deadly gas was now issuing.
Suarmisiog at a glance what had happened and knowing to what peril their
fellow-workmen were exposed,: they
ubnflinchingly entered the death-trap
to try and effect thetr rescue. They
form of Bracelin and bore him to the
outer air where he was revived with
. great difficulty,
Again entering the death chamber
they groped their way to the body of
Bargonoli and tenderly ecsrried him
out when all kuown means available
were resorted to to resuscitate him,
but to no purpose, for the spirit of the
sturdy miver had winged its flight to
other shores. The asphyxiated man
was & native of Italy and leaves a wife
and child in that country to mourn bis
sudden taking off. :
Upon investigation it was found
that a quantity of powder was placed
near a stove—which is kept in the tannel—to thaw oat, and it is thought
that on acconnt of its close proximity
to the beat the nitro glycerine exploded filling the tannel with its destroying
fumes.
Charles Stocks and Samuel Butler, .
two well-known miners of Grass Valley, who were examining the mine,
had just left it a sbort while before the
explosion occurred, and they are now
thanking their lucky stare that they.

Pretty High Authority.
General Winfield Scott, the hero of
the Mexican war, used a secretary for
all his correspondence, private as well
as Official. Once, in the absence of his
secretary, he undertook to write an order for the transferring of some provisions, and spelled “wagon” “waggon.”
Later, the secretary in looking through
the various memoranda, etc., found
the order and detected the error.
“General,” he asked affably, “by
what authority do you spel) ‘wagon’
with a double ‘g’?’
Scott never turned a hair as he re
plied without a moment’s hesitation:
“By what authority? By the authority of the major general commanding the armies of the United Statea,
sir! What better authority do you
want?”
