L. 0.0’Neill, one of the most widely known and most popular-railroad-menin this eection of the country, met a shocking and horribie death in Ssoramedto at 8:25 o'clock yesterday afterternoon, The deceased, who was section boss at Colfax, had received the appointment to a similar position at Brighton, Sacramento county, which ia ‘situated on. the ehort line between Sacramento and Placerville, El Dorado’ county. He took the 7:80ca. m. local train from Colfax for the Capital City. The pay car of the Seuthern Pucific was due and he stopped over to receive his monthly wages. As the train for Brighton was scheduled to leave at 8:25 he was somewhat late in arriving at the depot on account of this delay, pulling out. Not wishing to be left behind he made a rurfor the moving train and succeded in overtaking it. He attempted to swing himself between two coaches but the train had gained such velocity by thie time that the momentum broke his hold and he slipped and fell, falling beneath the rapidly revolving wheels. : The horrifying sight was witnessed by a number of people and the trainmen, The latter immediately brought the fron monster to a halt and burried back to where the unfortunate man had fell. The eight that met their gaze was a distressing one. ‘Toe bead was entirely severed from. the trank, both legs cut off and the body otherwise fearfully bruised and™ mangled. The remains were tenderlygathered together and will be brought to his late home at Colfax for burial. Mr. O'Neill leaves a wife and five children at Colfax who are heartbroken over the terrible affliction which has . befallen them, and the sincere sympathy of all is extended to them. The eccident has cast a deep gloom over the little railroad town of Colfax, where thedead man Was in charge of the repairing.of that section of the road: He was toiversally liked and respected by.ali with whom he came in contact, end his sudden, taking off ie a severe ehock to all, > The Winter Route East. An erroneous impression prevails that because the Rocky Mountains have a bigh elevation, the winter climate is cold and snowy, The fact is the average precipitation of moisture during the entire year is less than fitteen inches, and danger from snow blockades on the railroads very slight. This is especially true of the Denver & Rio Grande, over ‘which System travel bas gone with less interruption for the past ten winters than upon the majority of lines popularly supposed to be free from such delays.
