Not on Merit.
A gentleman who recently visited the
porter that he took great pains to carefully
examine the varibus exhibits of products
from the different counties. ~He had been
led to believe, from the fact that Sacramento
had received some fifteen thousand more
votes for the Chronicle’s cup than any other
county, that that county had the best dis“Jmagine my surprise,” said
he, ‘‘when I came to see them, that cf all,
the snide displays it was that of Sacramento.
On merit Santa Clara should certainly have
the cup. The next is that of Alameda. So
far ag Sacramento is concerned, instead of
receiving a silver cup it should be awarded
a brass cup, emblematical of its unparalelled
eheek.in buying up votes to get something
that does not rightfully belong to it.”

appointed Thomas M. Eby, the Executive

Five ‘Chinese and four Italian orangepickers and packers, working at the ranch
of Frank Bouchard at Los Nietos, across the
Los Angeles river from Rivera, were driven
off the ranch and ont of the locality by a
mob of men and boys heavily armed with
guns and clubs at about’ 11 o’clock Friday

CALIFORNIA POLITICS.
Republican Candidates for the Various Nominations.
The following is a epecial correspendence
to the Amador Record from Sacranento :
The Sacramentan wh» is not.a member
of some committee these days isaltogethey
lost, and of course, his social and business
status is nil. What with the Midwinter
Fair coupon fight, the securing of the Re-~
publican and Democratic conventions for
Sacramento, and other matters looked upon
by the natives as of equal importance, the
town is enjoying ‘‘a boom” of .some magnitude. In fact, if there is anything in reach
that Sacramento doesn’t want your correspondent has failed so far to find it,
It-looks as though Jake Neff may fail to
reach the Governorship, as Sacramento politicians would prefer to see the nomination
(go toSan Franeisco or the southern half ot
the State, as that would leave a better
chance for aspirants here te corral a goodly
share of the State offices.
Senator E. C. Voorheis is talked of a good
deal as a probable nominee for LieutenantGovernor, but this would, of course, be im.
possible was Neff to_secure_the nomination
for Goverpor, as it would hardly be good
politics to give two such important offices
t6 the northern half Of the State.
Frank D. ‘Ryan will! undoubtedly, make
a. formidable fight for the Congressional
nomination in the,Second district. He is a
strong man, very popular-here;
A. J. Johnston, the present State Printer,
6 hefore the Republican convention for
ON somiation for that position. Mr,
Johnston is a Native Son, having been born
in Nevada county, near Grass Valley.
Frank Rhodes is generally found around
the old corner, but says that he has gone out
of business, quit politics and joined the
church, During the attempt to interview
. him on the coming political situation he confidingly winked his left eye and smiled a
smile of sadness.
Very kind.
The Transcriet desires to express its
thanks to the triends who have brought and
sent coupens to this office, to_ be. voted for
Nevada county’s mineral exhibit. We have
received some from Los Angeles, San Frapcisco, Sacramento, Bear Valley, Emigrant
Gap, North Bloomfield, Virginia City,
French Corral, North San Juen, Washington, and a number of other places.

Deafness Cannot be Cured
By local applications as they cannot
reach the e diseased d portion of the ear, There
is ‘only one way to cure deafness, and that
tis by constitutional remedies. Deafness is
caused by an inflamed condition of the

When this tube is inflamed you have a

when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the
result, and unless the inflammation, can be

Pemeseaae §
A haunted house -in these practical and
unromantic days is something of a rarity,
but -anindividual haunted with the idea
frequently met with, Disbelief in the ability
of medicine to cure is only a mild form of
monomania, although in some cases repeated
failures to obtain relief from many different
eonrces woul almost seem to justify the
doubt. .Hostetter's Stomach Bitters has
demonstrated its ability to overcome dyspepsia, . constipation, liver and kidney
trouble, malarial complaints and nervoushess, and its recorded achievements in the
curative line-ought at least to warrant its
trial by any one truubled with either of the

The Land of Promise
Is the mighty West, th the land that “tickled
with a hoe laughs a harvest ;” the El Dyrado
of the miner ; the goal of the agricultural
emigrant. While it teems with all the eloments of wealth and prosperity, some of the
tairest and most fruiuiul portions of it-beak a
harvest of malaria reaped in its fullness by
those unprotected by a medicinal safeguard,
No one seeking or dwelling in a malarial
locality is safe from the scourge without
Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters. Emigrants,
hear this in mind, Commercial travelers sojourning in malarious regions should carry a
bottle of the Bitters in tue traditional grip-'
sack. Against the cff-éts of exposure, mental or bodily overwork, damp ai.d unwholesome food or water, it is an infallible defense. Cuonstipatien, rheumatism, _biliousness, dyspepsia, nervousness and loss of
strength .are all remedied by this genial
