Society Organized.

Last evening twenty-five members of the
Grass Valley Christian Endeavor Society
came up to assist in the organization of a
society of that character in the Congrega
tional Church here. Rev. L. J. Garver
delivered a very pleasing address, after
which Mr. Smith, President of the Gras+
Valley society, proceeded with the work
of organizing. Twenty-eight members
were received. The officers are as follows:
Miss Edith Edwards, Pres.; Miss Martha
Sims, Vice Pres.; D. A. Dailey, Rec, Sec.;
Mrs, Thos. Coffey, Cor. Sec.; Miss Honnor
Stevens, Treas. A committee was appuinted
on coustitution and by-laws consisting «f
Rev. J. Sims, Mr. Dailey, Mrs. Taylor,
Mrs. Waggoner and Miss Lizzie Avery.
The Christian Endeavor Suciety has» been
in existence about fourteen years in. the
United States and numbers today over two
million members. Great success is predicted for.the.societyin this place.

The mountain cat recently purchased by
W. H. Smith and turned loose in the storehouse back of his store, is proving to be a
great rat catcher. If he keeps up his lick
tine rats in that neighborhood will be exter
minated after awhile. Every night this
watchful little animal kills several of the
pestiferous rodenta. This morning ‘six of
them were found on the floor, The cat is
becoming quite tame.

Anson B. Swap, for many years 4 resident of North San Juan, at which place he

Julian Rappand, who is making a tour of
the world and traveling on foot wherever it

will remain uutil tomorrow. He is acting

The Bloody Crime Committed by a
Negro in New Orleans.

two brothers named Pattingim yesterday,
killing one and fatally wounding the other,

Frank Pattigim threw down a few chips
or splinters on the negro’s bead from the
second story of a factory, ‘where he was
employed, The neggo lovked up" and applied a vile epithet to-them and made
other threats. The boys’ then went down

_megro drew a revolver and began firing,
hitting Frank in the left breast, killing him
almost instantly, and shooting Harry in
