Unitea States Senate, “The Democratic members were so few in number that they could not prevent it, even if they had wished t» doso. They strove unavailingly for the adoption of certain amendments, and failing in these, voted for the ratification of the unamended treaty, The action of the Senate will be generally applauded. The American people believe in the canal and are willing to pay all that is necessary to get it. It.has. been reported that the transconiinental railroads have worked against it‘ seeing in the shortened water route a formidable competitor, bat if this ramor be correct their opposition has availed nothing. The many advantages of the canal have been so often discussed that repstition is unnecessary. Now the question is to be put to the actual test. The _ United States President and Senate believe eo fally in its importance that they are willing to appropriate an enormous sum of money for making the experiment. = After the ratification and signing of the treaty will come the actual work on the canal iteelf. It will take many millions of dollars, years of time and thousands of workmen, That it will be completed goes without saying. Oompetent engineers have reported favorably on its feasibility and with money for the work it can be accomplished, The original De Lessepe. company squandered an immense amount of money in the work, the succeeding French com> Bt Ban Francisco. pany which has sold its interests to the United States hes kept up the expenditure, though on a very ‘greatly “reduced scale, and the United States will continue to pour money into the samé hole. But the American experience will differ from those of its two predecessors in “that it will carry the work toa ~ sticcessfal conclusion.
