THE COUPON BUSINESS.
The Editor of the Marysville Democrat’s Bad Reasoning.
We copy the following from the Demo~
crat of Monday:
“Last week the Democrat contained an
article in which. the contest for the Examiner cup and the Chronicle vase was called
a farce and fraud, stating that. these journals were sold by the thousands for the coupons. The Nevada City TRANSCRIPT copied
the article and added the following:
“The statement is false that anyone in or
out of Nevada county is buying up extra
copies of any of the above-named journals.
In the same issue appeared the following
lgcal item, which sounds different from the
above brief statement:
“The Transcript sent by this morhing’ 8
mail to San ,Francisco nine hundred and
fifty-nine mineral coupons to be voted for
Nevada county. Last week the TranscripT sent eleven hundred and ninety-five
making a total in two weeks of two thousand, one hundred and fifty-four.” This
item proves that the’ statement, we made
was true.”
What nonsense. It is true that the Trancoupons to San Francisco, and it is equally
true that not one of the coupons were purchased. All of them were sent to this
office, to be forwarded to San Francisco,
by residents whe desire to see Nevada
county win the cup. Not a ten-cent piece
was expended in collecting the coupons.

SOUTH YUBA WATER CO.
A Brief. Resume and History of the
Company. 2
The South Yuba Water Company has prepared a pamphlet of the history and resources of its company, and through the
book are many illustrations of the lakes covered by this corporation. The facts are interesting and shew what extensive operations
have been done by the use of water stored in
the mountains. We glean the following
facts from: the booklet :
It. furnishes water for irrigation, for
municipal, supply and for the various uses of
power ; the range of its operations covers
the larger partof Nevada and Placer counties.
Its natural resources are the local rivers
and creeks, and back of these. the melting
snows of the Sierra Nevadas,
“The company’s watershed—an area of 150
square miles—lies about the sources of the
South Yuba, part beneath the crest of the
Sierra Nevada. The entire available sup—
ply of the watershed is probably not less than
two hundred billions of gallons.and is ample
for all likely future needs of -the Company
on the most ambitious estimates. ;
The storage reserviors of the Seuth Yuba
are fifteen i in number and are of great size

and capacity. ‘
At the center of the system lics the most
important of -all—Fordyce, an expanse of
474 acres. It is situated on the North Fo k
of the South Yuba. It has a waste weir 100
feet long and 5 deep ; it-cest $300,000. ‘The
capacity of the reservior is six thousand
millions of gallons,
Two miles tothe north and a thousand
feet higher lies Meadow Lake, covering an
pouring its 1,200 millions of gallons down
the rocky slepe into Fordyce by a dam,
1,100 feet long 40 feet high and 100 feet
This lake has a capacity in gallons of 1,275,000, 000.
Sterling reservoir is lighted far above
Fordyce and empties into it down a rugged
precipice,
It cost $20,000: This lake lies silent and
alone in a wooded region, on which the snows
are piled high until far into August. Ithas
a capacity in gallens of 340,000,000.
Six miles to the east, White Rock lake
contributes its waters te Fordyce through
the North Fork of the South Yuba. “Its
dam cost $5,000. It has a capacity of
255,000,000.
Lost River and Mossy Pond lake lie to
the south of Fordyce. Still further to the
south are found the three Peak lakes, which
pour their waters into Spaulding, through
the south fork of the South Yuba.
Fall Creek lakes, six in number, lie on
northerly branches of the South Yuba and
The two principal ones are Upper Carr and Upper Culbertson, Capacity in galfons is 1,020,000,000.
The dam is 290 feet leng, 67 high and 67
deep ; and the outlet is by a tunnel cut
through @ solid point ef rock, with two
waste weirs each 120 feet long. The area is
215 rcres and the capacity over.2,000 .millions-of gallons, ‘The-entire capacity uf all
these storage basins is thus 12,325 millions
of-gallons, —
The canal system of the South Yuba
Water Company is very large,. forming a
net work over Nevada and Placer counties
and meastires nearly 400 miles of distance.
The Main Canal penetrates a mile of tunneling in all and it is said to have cost adventurous mipers-who built it $600,000. These
canals are-forty-thtee in number and cover a
length in*miles 380,375.
There are eleven distributing reservoirs,
These are small and not in any wise elaborate ; but in the aggregate they represent a
considerable investment of capitol. They
are as follows; Alta, Chalk Bluff, Leonard,
Alta Hill, Manzanita, Blue Lent, Ridge,
Auburn,, Loomis, Leomis (second) Camp
Far West. Alta Hill, in Grass Valley, has
an elevation of 2,700 feet and a capacity in
gallons of 550,000
The Company owns several thousand acres
of land. The most choice of all these possessions ig the Bear Valley ranch, This
consists of nearly 1,000 acres.
The fall in elevation between Bear Valicy
and the lowest terminal is over 4,000 feet
and; in many places the gtade drops so
abruptly as to furnish power in large amount
to Nevada City and GrassValley and Powder
Works at Clipper Gap. With a slight incréase in capacity of the two canals at Newcastle, 2,000 horse power can be developed
and 1,000 goes to waste several miles beyond
toward the northeast. At Cape Hern two
miles abeve Colfax, a drop of over 1,000 feet
inside of one mile of distance renders possible the development of almest limitless
power.
The large mills at Grass Valley and N
vada City new using their water power se
port that the expense is but little over onethird the cost of steam power. This branch
of the company’s.business will be largely
increased, the coming year by the transmission of power by electricity-to points
hitherto inaccessible..

Deafness Cannot be Cured
By local applications as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear, There
is only one way to cure deafness, and that
is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is
caused by an inflamed condition of the
mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube.
When this tube is inflamed yeu have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the
result, and unless the inflammation, can -be
taken out and this tube restored ‘to its
normal condition, hearing will be destroyed
forever ; nine cases out of ten are caused by
catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed
condition of the mucous surfaces. 4
We will give One Hundred Dollars -for
any case of Deafness (eaused by catarrh)
that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh
Cure. Send for circulars free.

Sunday by shooting herself under the heart,
was gfeatly improved yesterday, and Dr.

life. He said at noon yesterday that her
temperature was normal and that shewas
feeling decidedly better in every way, says
the Sacramento Bee. The bullet which
passed through her body shattered a rib bene

picked wp. The girl was in more cheerful
spirits-yesterday, and said she thanked God
that she was stillalive. She says now that
she wants to live, and that she is sorry she
attempted to take her life. She said to her
nurse yesterday morning, ‘Oh, Iwas so
desperate, and I thought I must die to get
out of my misery. It seemed that everybody had turned against me, and there was
nothing for me to live for any longer.”’ Miss
Marker was taken to-the home of Policeman
