A NEW FARM IMPLEMENT. A Machine to Move Soil From High to Lower Places. Charles Henry, who lives west of Biggs, Was in Oroville a few days ago, says the ~ Register, and while there explained te son-e friends an invention that has been tested in the. vicinity-of his home-and which promises tobe a great did to farmers in the low, flat, . . wet lands that are difficult to work successfully. The invention ccnsists of one or more plows and an elevator all-being run by four or six horses. A strip ef the low adobe land is taken and the machine put to work on it. The plows cut a furrow and the elevator lifts up and carries the newly plowed land as far from the furrow as desired wher, it is deposited. The result is when the field is finished that-a-series of ditches have-been™ o1t and a corresponding series of broad lands SAM DAVIS DEFRAUDED. Mike De Young Ran Six Aces Up Against His Five Queens, Sam Davis, the editor of the Midwinter Appeal, like all other journalists has his ups and downs. In a recent issne he makes the following points : : ‘Newspaper publishers in the interior are warned against Mike de Young, an appr ntice in our office, whom we took in last week to make a newspaper man of and teach how to boss a composing room. He cleaned the proprietor of this paper out of $1,700 on four aces and then skipped out for Yuba City. We discovered after he left that there were two miore aces in the pack, against which our five queens had but a slim chance. He is no longer.aut iorized to s>lici subscriptions for this paper.” PLAINT NO, 2, — “Subscribers not receiving theiF “paper this week will please send in their names Governor Markham called last Friday and in lifting his feet onto the table pied several galleys of the names of our paid up —-sub= scribers. SHE HAD EXPERIENCE —— And Knows How to Make the Most Money Out of the Business. March is an important month in the poul_ try yard, writes Mrs. J. B, Howe in the Farmer’s Voice. It might be called th: index to the ultimate success or failure oi the season's undertaking. In this mont) the final purchases are made by all ‘‘forehanded” poulte:ers, which add to the beaut and value of the flock, though, ifthe weather is favorable, all bens should kx mated-up-the latter part of Febriary. Thi hen seems to be a nervous, sensitive creatur: in some particulars. A day or. two of -es-. -— forced confinement during stormy weathe: will often suffice to stop the egg productioi for the time being, of an entire flock, whil: changing to new quarters usually preduces the same result. Oue will readily understand the necessity __,of completing all arrangements pertaining te the management and welfare of the feathered flock as soon as possible, so as to lose n Precious time in late March or early April or even festive May tor homesick hens te resume work and begin laying.
