A New Chief ‘Justice. The Supreme Court Amendments having been defeated. it de volves ‘upo Governor Bartlett to appoftit-a new: Chief Justice in place of Judge Morrison, deceased. The constitution provides “if a vacancy cecur in the office of a Justice, the Governor shall appoint a person to hold the office until the election and qualification of a Justice tgfill the vacancy, which election shall take-place at® the next succeeding general election, and the Justice, so elected shall hold the office for_the remainder of the unexpired term.” Under the above -reading-of the law the appointee of the Governor can on*4¥ hold the office until the general election of 1888. We do not believe the Governor could give such universal satisfaction as that of Judge Niles . Searls, Who is now one of the Court Commissioners. The Auburn Argus says: E, W. Moore of Colfax has sold a half interest . in his vineyard to a banker of Carson, . Nev. Several teams are now busily . at work plowing on it. Hayford and Lobner some weeks ago sold 582 acres of land comprising nearly all of Section 13 to San Francisco parties.
