One of the Indians who has for some years \past resided at the campoodie, about a mile west of town, has recently obtained a Gov__ernment title. to the land which has so long and presented a check to assistant Cashier A. Herrick. After examining the check, Herrick, having doubts as to its genuineness, returned it and an altercation ensued between the man and the cashier, during which the former drew a pistol and fired several shots in rapid eeeoeenee, canto beén occupied as a dwelling place or camp _. by the Diggers. The title takes in quite a piece of land, including a strip that cute off a portion of Eph Herring’s clover field. A year or two ago a white man. offered the Indian $1,000 fot his right, but the offes was refused. The Indians would not sel) the land, they say, for $20,000, because it has been their home se’long. . There are-only a few Indians at the cam} now, but it is to be the stopping place of al visiting members of the tribe who may bap pen to come along or whe may wish to tak« up their residence there. Indian Charley. the head man at the camp, and’ to whom th title was issued, has built himself quite «+ reomy and camforthile house during the past year, and is improving the property all the time. He has a small orchard and garden and raises considerable hay every season. He keeps two or three horses, owns 8 light wagon and a cart, and with his squaw and two or three pickaninnies lives after the fashion of white people. Charlie is a rather intelligent fellow, having lived 4 great deal with white people when a bey; . and is also very industrious. He has commenced, fencing in his land. It Will oe Down. oars We mentioned the oth other day that a ghost had been seen at different times in the “vicinity of the Catholic Church. Iv ie] claimed that several parties have seen the specter and that opinions differ as to what it really is, some holding that it is the spirit of a departed being aud “* doomed for a certain term to walk the night,” while others believe that it is no ghost at all but somebedy playing the part of one. To ease their minds and at the same time solve the mystery, a number of ladies living in the vicinity have determined to watch for this midnight apparition and take a shot at it with rock salt or pepper grains. But their combined courage was not sufficient to attempt the task without help from the sterner sex, and ‘this they say, in a half beastful way, could not be obtained. The aforesaid females are now cogitatinig upon the advisability of tackling the job unaided and thus score another triumph fer’ the “courage of their’ sex.
