InEastern Ne-} yada County. e Truckee Republican of last even.MARCH 23, 1899 rected near Floriston will soon be rocéss of construction. 'The.water 1 be diverted from the river and ied in a pipe ten feet in diameter he site of the mill. It will be loat a point where the river gives power, thére being a fall ‘of fifty feet ie a distance of less than half a mile: The projectors of the clei are interested in pulp and paper plants in Oregon,;and thoroughly conversant with every phase ofthe business, The plant will be much larger than was first thought and. will be constructed for the manufacture of all kinds of paper. The plant. will cost $250,000. ‘When completed and in full operation itis expected that 400 hands will be employed; also that the demand for wood to be used in the manufacture of pulp will be 40,000 cords a year. Sacha plant will give » new impetus to business in this vicinity. The wood can, be hauled to the river at any point and floated down withont cost. If the project is carried out as we uuderstund it, it means much to this part of the county.’ Yet it is only the beginning of what may be expected in the line of manufacture along the Truekee river. There is ull the time power capable of running dozens of snch factories going to waste and, if we are endowed with any spirit‘of prophecy, it will not be many years until this vast power is harnessed and made the means of great wealth.to.this part of the State. Such excéllent opportunities do not go long unnoticed in the progress that now stirs civilized _Deople. It Was Not a Rat. A woman rushed into a store. on the Frederick.road, holding her skirts in a bunch at the knee and crying: “T have arat! I have a rat!” There was at once a partic in the store. Phe proprietor was a woman, and she disappeared through the back doer sprecipitately, leaving her guest shrieking. “Oh, help me get this rat!” Finally a neighbor woman was enliated; and they returned to the store, ‘ where-tthe woman «was still clutching her garments, and was giving vent to cries of the utmost distress: “Ob, he‘is eating me! He is eating me!” The rescuers upproached cautiously. They counseled together as to the sort of strategy which would best dispose of a rat in the position indicated. ‘The woman whe had the rat received their help gladly and told them where to catch hold of her skirts, while she would looser her hold. But when she began to urclasp her clutch the women fied, and came in.collision at the door leading out of the reom. When their courage had returned they assisted the suffering woman to work the rat toward the floor, When it was finally revealed it was found to be one of the woman’s corset stays, which had. slipped down and was scratching ina way similar.tothe nipping teeth of.a rodent. —Ex.
