Nevapa City Dairy TRANSCRIPT NATP. BROWN, Proprietor. et ———_ $6 Per Year. Cyfel, -= = « = TERMS OF SUBSORIPTION By Carrier, . 12 1-2¢. Per Week Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City — MONDAY..... Fis tons seus eeere-eee Peeeerrenoers — THIEVES IN HIGH SOCIETY > SAID TO BE NUMEROUS. OW TO GUARD against theft i n fashionable life is a pazzilog conundram. Stealing is rife in high society, conceal the fact as we may, and it seems.to be on the increase. In spite of every precaution jewels and other valuables are constantly being purloined at swell society functions under circumstances that clearly indicite that the thieves are among the guests and not the servants. In the great majority of snch cases, the victims prefer suffering in silence to creating a scandal by making a public outcry. Thus Madame Grundy affords fingered fraternity that have the entrée immunity to the members of the lightto fashionable society. It frequently happens that certain persons are more than suspected -of being sneak thieves, but nothing is openly said about their practioés on account of family connections, bat a subtle understanding is reached that they are not to be left alone. with objects of value that are portable and easily concealed, It is stated that there are men and women known to be thieves ip every social set in the large cities. Io England thefts in fashionable society are more common than in the United States even. It is generally recognized there that the presence of some * thieves in every large gathering, however select, is unaveidable. There as here the identity of persons addicted to larceny is frequently known, but doors sre not shut in thelr faees, though their industry je “discouraged” by various artifices, Fear of scandal and that ogre of society, family connection, protect the criminals from ostracism and legal punishment. Commenting on the prevalence of this form of dishonesty in high life, the) Gentlewoman, a London periodical devoted to feminine affuirs, says: “It is an open secret—although it clab to avoid an open scandal within the disappearance of articles varying is, of course, in the interest of each its gatee—that no day passes without in value from a few pence toa few pounds, the loes of which, from the time and manner of their disappearance, can in no single instance be ascribed to venality of the staff. They are adroitly f ® ‘lifted’ in the ebb and flow of members and their visitors. “In some clubs so complete is the a nderstanding that ‘findings are keepings’ that it is considered inadvisable to leave a tempting sable cape, an engaging muff or a particularly smart um mmnudesting 6yes.~ A iéw Version OF t brella under the envious gaze of comhouse-carrying srlail is suggested in the spectacle of wrap-laden members who prefer the certainty of their property in their own hands to the chance of seeing it multiplied in their ueighbors,” The above cstries ite-own moral. Fashionable society is too weak and cowardly to free iteelf of its own vermin. Thieves are received as gueste and shielded from punishment, for social reasons, by people who would push the law to ite utmost extremity against pettier and poorer pilferers. As society becomes more luxurious, the larceny habit, like some other offenses against decency and morality, becomes more prevalent. Impunity and opportunity operate to spread the vice, ‘Birthday Party. Saturday evening little Miss Bernice Powell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. T, R. Powell, was tendered s birthday party and a large number of the little one’s playmates were present to vie with one another in making her eighth anniversary a day long to be remembered by the bevy of youngsters agsembled at Mr. Powell’s beautifal Pine. street residence, Various amusements were indulged in, games being the ever favorite method of whiling away the bappy moments. Prizes were offered for the successful winners of the same which proved an incentive. for the children to exert themselves to capture the handsome trophys, and Misses Minnie Lane and Gladys Chivell ebowed themeelves adepts by carting off the honors. A booby prize that was hung up wes eaptured by Beatrice Ninnis. After the merry crowd had enjoyed themselves to their hbearte’ content with playing they were treated to such a repast as fairly made them -.balge. -At' a children’s late bour the javeniles diesembled to their various bearthstones, hoping in their young’ hearte that their little friend would be the hostess at many snoch gatherings in the fature. The young Mies was the recipient of numerous. nice gifts. Those present were as follows: Minnie Lane, Gladys Chivell, Beatrica Ninnis, Bernice Powell, Marceline Addie, Merle Sweet, Jennie Holland, Verna HalJ, Nanette Murchie, Alice Britiend, Marthe Bowerman, Gladys Chiveli, Rachel Morgan, Gladys Moore, Lavinia Richards, Savory Ford, Elise Myers, Emma Harryhousen, Madeline Shaw, Loyd Dunster, Marietta Powell.
