THURSDAY... MARCH 24, 1898.
SUPPRESSION OF A FRAUD.
Considerable attention has been given
recently by the Treasury Department
to the elimination of an evil which was.
assuming large proportions, and which
had. become seriously annoying to honest American manufacturers of cutlery.
The. practice of having American trademarks stamped on the blades of foreign made knives and scissors hus been
peremptorily prohibited by an order of
the Secretary of the Treasury. This
recent order was designed to put in
active force section 11 of the new tariff
law, which says in effect that no imported article shall bear a name or
trade-mark which tends to the belief
that the said article was made in th
United States.
Within the past few years American
manufacturers of cutlery have had to
compete with an enormous traffic in
cheaply made goods brought to this
country from abroad and sold widely
on the strength of bogus American
trade-marks. The alertness of the
Government examiner in the local appraiser’s department is now making
short work of this particalar kind of
deception. E

TRUE AS GOSPEL.
Last eveuing’s Grass Valley Tidings
says: “The Trustees of Grass Valley
and her twin sister, Nevada City (ifthe
latter will allow the connection), are}
the <object of much criticism at the
present time and their paths are not
altegether strewn with roses. While
one Board is trying to satisfactorily
settle the question of a defaulting
official, the other is trying to build a
new water works without causing the
people to be divided against themselves.
As the men on the Board of Trustees
are usually intelligent, level-headed
men, the best way for them to do is to
decide according to their best judgment and listen to, complaints afterward.”
Tae Baldwin Locomotive Works: of
Philadelphia has just reveived an order from Egypt for fifteen heavy locomotives. It is noticeable that the
Egyptian State Railway is under British control, but our locomotives are not
only superior to and cheaper than
those built in England, but our builders can furnish them on shorter notice.
The free trade plan was to have all such
things.as locomotives builtin England,
but our policy of protection has
changed all that, to the great advantage
of locomotive users.
A PartiaMenTary cricket team, consisting of five lords and fourteen “M,
Ps,” and with Attorney-General Sir
Richard Webster as captain, proposes
to make a “professional” tour of the
world next summer. The Bulletin
sporting editor is safe in predicting
‘\ that if this lofty: and lordly crowd
should care to tackle a baseball game,
the back streets of almost any American city could furnish a team that
would lay them out in good shape.
THE FLOWER festival season has arrived. Los Angeles, San Jose and San
Rafael are all. preparing for carnivals
and a number of other interior cities
are figuring on similar entertainments.
Nevada City will in the meantime manage to enjoy herself hilariously with the
gatherings of the Grand Army and the
Native Sons. ee

In its widest scope the arid region
of the United States comprises half the
territory of the entire country, for to
s0 great an extent must irrigation be
employed either as a primary or secondary factor in the cultivation of crops.
From. about -the ninety-sixth to the
ninety-ninth meridian there isa strip
of about 250 milesin breadth which
Majcr J. W. Powell calls the ‘‘subbumid’’ tract. Within it there isan annoal precipitation sufficient to insure
crops, buf the precipitation’ is so diaproportionately bestowed and at sxch
irregular intervals. throughout the year
that the seasons of successful farming
ure interspersed with long and disastrous droughts. Reliance, therefore, upon moisture directly falling from the
clouds is extremely hazardons, and, unsupplemented by waters from stream
distributicn, it is not generally reposed.
But west of the ninety-ninth and east
of the one bandred and. twenty-first
meridian, throughout the whole breadth
of the country, from Canada te Mexico,
there is a district in which nothing
needing moisture greater than that required by the artemisia or the cactus
can be planted and grown. It isa region aggregating about 1,340,000 square
miles, a territory larger than Arabia,
as large as and not more arid than the
combined areas of Persia and India,

‘ BOWNE, Chemists, New York,
The only formality which the . swain
has to go through to get the hand of his
promised one is to kill a tapir, an act
by which he proves that he will be capable of supporting his prospective family. The death of a tapir under such
conditions is quite an event. The whole
tribe assembles. at the carcass, and a
acene of gluttony begins that does not
cease till nothing is left but the skin
and bones of the ‘‘great beast.’’ That is
the only ceremony of marriage. The
Caingua is usually monogamous, but
polygamy is allowed. Marriages of relatives are carefully avoided, After confinement the young mother has a rest
of'a few days before resuming: her serv
ile task. She carries the newborn infant in ascarf or sort of little hammock
alung over her shoulders. She does not
think of weaning it fora year and a
half or two years, while the child bas
already been exercised in arms with
miniature bows. Ideas of cleanliness
seem foreign to the women as well as
to the men, and it is a lucky chance
that will induce them to comb.their
magnificent heads of hair.—Dr.Machon
