‘ ; The San Francisco Balletin says:
hile the business of blacklisting by .
hewspapers is still im.progress it may
ot be amiss:to suggest that it be made
two-side affair in. order that«some
mblance of justice may be injected
ito what at. present. seems to be a

Li
“tee so-called Republican newspapers which have been largely instrumetital ‘in defeating the ‘efforts of. the
party, as represented in the Legislature, to elect a Republican United
Statés’ Senator, ‘this’ morning declare
the humiliating result a victory and
attempt to glorify the men who aided
them: in' their destructive work. The
adjournment of the Legislature withOut electing a Senator leaves the party
in-very voor plight to begin the task of
rebrganizing for the contest with thecommon enemy two years hence—a
contest which, despite the assertion of
supfeme confidence by party leaders,
is of the gravest import. The enmities
that have been engendered by the
fierce conflict at Sacramento are not to
be treated lightly. They threaten disaster in the future and what is more
they’ reveal a danger to which the Repablican party of this State may be
repeatedly subjected hereafter unless
some drastic measures are adopted to
rémove the cause. This danger is found
in the presence in the party lines of
newspapers whose aims and purposes
are prostituted to the selfish ambitions
of their millionaire owners—men who,
balked of their personal desires, do
not’ hésitaté -to use the infiuence of
théir journals to wreck the party to
‘which ‘they profess to owe allegiance,
These are the Republicans and these
the newspapers which should be blacklisted: Fhe* Chronicle ‘this morning
has a blacklit of the men who voted
against ‘its wishes. The Republican
party should keep # little list of its
own, and--whenever a-traitor ‘is’ found;
whether he be a millionaire who has
Senatorial ambitions and a newspaper
oO sh uséd in sowing dissension in the
blican fields, or just the common,
ordinary cutthroat, it should “put him
on the list,’ for he never would be
missed.”
It is a fact so plain as to be almost
self-evident that the Republican party
and the San Francisco Call. and
Chroniélé.,cannot get along together
any longer. They have kept company
, So far with difficulty, and the compan:
ionship has never been satisfactory or
harmonious. The party has had. to
make concessions to keep these two
boys in good humor, but now, having
failed, and as a result, having had an
open rupture, it is as well to admit the
somewhat painful fact: that these two
individuals are a detriment and a peril
that should be eliminated. If not, the
troubles will recur as often as they are
said nay. Whenever the party. may
refuse to make either of these millionaires a Senator or Governor, or
Commissioner to Paris, or any other
excellent thing, it may expect him to
fly into a rage, tear the party linen to
tatters, set’ friend against friend in
4 fruitless ‘battle, and then when the
fight is over and the field is strewn
with the slain, throw their caps high in
the air and cry “Victory!”
The. recent experience at Sacramento
has been dearly bought, but it should
be-a-lesson never to be forgotfen, Republicans should remember the Ohronicle and Call as party wreckers, and
when they begin to prepare for the coming State and national campaign
should, blacklist them and proceed with
out reference to their wishes,
