ANOTHER LETTER
From Walter Mead, Our San Francisco
Correspondent.
Saw Francisco, March 26th.
Eprror Transcrtet:;—In. my letter of
the 15th inst, I said I would quote from one
I had received from John P! Skelton, Thit
I propose to do quite copiously, for several
reasons. Mr, Skelton and Nat, P, Brown
were the founders of the Nevada City Transcript, and, up to the time of his removal
to this city, Mr. Skelton had been so closely
identified with the press and people of Nevada’ county, raising his voice and wielding
his pen at all times in her behalf, that I am
‘ ure any news from him will be read with
‘pleasure.
Secondly, there are some remarks that 1
desire to make upon the state of the printing trade here, and his letter furnishes me a
“text. I shall be as brief as the subject will
permit, but it is of euch a serious nature
that I must write of it as it appears to me.
I shall quote from Mr. Skelton:
“This country is settled by English, bobtailed horses and corduroy pants, It is
amusing to hear the people discant on
things in-.general. They all have the Eng‘lish, twang in voice, and are all distinctly
the Queen’s Own in manner and style. There
are few vegetables and fruit raised in thie
vicinity, and all things are brought from
quite a distance away. Thisis a barren
waste in location (the Printer’s Home), and
is far from being a ‘garden of roses,’ No
liquor can be sold nearer here than Maniteau, where mineral springs abound, ‘That
town is the home of the tourists, and are
all ‘English, you know,’ and all are well-to~-this part of Colorado, and their presence is
looked upon with disfavor, There is no
manufacturing of any kind, and no inducemints held out to poor peeple to settle in
our midst, Most of the people living near
here are engaged in mining or are interested
in mines at Cripple Creek, some 35 or 40
miles from here. These mines are paying
well, and English ‘snobs’ are the principal
owners of them.”
Continuing, Mr. Skelton has this to say
about the Home, With the advent of the
lineotype, I am afraid it will have to be enlarged to several times its present propor—
tions. But to quote:
“The Home is as well kept as any institution could be, and is under the superintendency of W. C. Schuman‘and his worthy
wife, Everything necessary to comfort and
convenience is furnished in abundance. The
beds and bedding are kept clean and neat,
the library is well supplied with books and
pap:2rs from all over the United States, and
‘a good billiard table may also be. found,
ready for use. The Home is situated on a
hill overlooking Colorado Springs and Colorado: City, two-and-a-half miles from the
former, and west from here, A short distance, from us, still west of Colorado
Springs, Pike’s Peak looms up, with its
crested peak of snow, which is ever present,
and -is the only thing we have to look upon
to relieve the eye of the monotony of our
sutroundings. Prospect Lake is but a mile
from us, At present it is frozen over, -and
its surface is constantly covered with skates,
The water is far from good, being strongly
imprégnated with alkali, This pvint is
very healthy, and as far as health is cencerned the location of the Home is excellent; ‘but it is fearfully dull, I assure you,
with, as I said, nothing of the beautiful to
relieve the eye or senses, There are 68 inmates. My health is mach improved, To
my California: friends I send greetings,
‘ should any eare to hear from me,
THE LINEOTYPE,
Such is the name given the new type-setting machine, as it is called, It does more,
It manufactures and sets type at the same
time, and when the line is finished it is a
“solid mass of metal. Should an insignificant error be discovered by the proof-reader
it is passed over; but should a glaring one
be found it is necessary to manufacture the
whole line over again. In a future letter I
will describe the whole process. At present
I must content myself by simply stating the
. effect its introduction here has had upon the
*praft.” It-has been variously estimated
thatone of these machines is equal to th«
work of from three to four compositors, according to the proficiency of the operator,
Now, when you take into consideration th
fact that every newspaper in this city, with:
* “the exception of the Call—and that is but
temporary—is supplied with these machines, you can readily understand the miserable position in which those who formerly
made ‘h ‘ir living by the’ “clicking of the
ty pe” are placed.
It is sad to see the number out of empleyment. When I think of the days wher

and even in that direction there is but
cnllientas = fF
The head, or display lines, are still set up
by hand, It requires very few ‘mento do
this. Iam informed that there are 60 persons holding regular ‘‘cases” on the Call.
Of these, four are women, There are 156
substitutes on the list, ‘The men lay off
only lay off one day. Comment is unnecessary. So it follows that in this one office
there are but one hundred and sixteen days
of work in a week to be divided among one
hundred and fifty-six men! Nota day’s
work apiece, What the outcome will be
only the Great Creator can tel, But the
“art preservative,” the art that was te and
did preserve all arts, has fallen into a sad
state of decay, and there is certainly no
hope for any improvement, As I said before, the Printer’s Home will have to be
greatly enlarged or the alms-houses all over
the country will receive many additions to
their inmates.
. SAINTS.
‘In 1861 there arrived in Nevada City
from St. Louis, Mo., a gentleman named
William Hi McCormick. His wife accomhanied him, She was a sister of our neverto-be-forgotten ‘Little Block.” A short
time before this, Dr. C, M. Bates had
bought the interest of Luther Wickes in the
drugstore at the corner of Broad anid Pine
streets. After conducting it . awhile he
found that it was more than he could at
tend to, so he sold a half-interest to Mr,
McCormick, who was a first-class druggist.
They made money; but along came the fire
of 1863—that disastrous Sunday—and
swept away all their possessions. Nothing
daunted, McC., in connection with Mr.
Levey, opened another store on Commetcial street, He remained there until some
time in 1864; when he sold out and came to
this city. He is now, and has been for several years, engaged in the marble business
and prosperity seema to attend him, His
family is grown up, hut no one would think
it to look at him, He still takes a deep
interest. in. all things pertaming to Nevada
county,
The other day I moet great big, goodvatured ‘‘Hank” Garfield, He used to
mine over on American Hill in the early
days, He first made his appearance in
1852, his father accompanying bim. For
years he was Superintendent of the Penobscot mill, one of: the first erected in the
county. At the breaking out of the Washoe
excitement he linked his fortuneswith
others and drove his stakes on the side of
Mount Davidson. ‘‘Hank” always was of
a sporting turn, and soon he opened a faro
game. He made money fast, but it was
said of him that he was one of the equarest
men that ever turned acard, There was
no “funny” business about him, and a look
into his honest, open face is sufficient to
convince one of the truth of what is said
about him. He has a ranch in Santa Barbara county, where his family resides, but
he spends most of his time here,
Who is there of the old-timers. that does
not remémber: ‘‘Dave” Hunt’? I'yenture to
say that those who knew him forty years
ayo know him today. Time has dealt
gently with him, and although he admits
that he has seen 62 summers he does. not
look it, He has traveled extensively
throughout the whole coast, in his profes~
sion as an expert miner, being now located
at Redding, in this State. I hada brief
talk with him. He saysno matter where
it may be, the love the old ‘‘boys” have for
each other will display itself whenever they
meet—Nevada county is the countersign.
He mentioned a couple of instances, but as
they were of a personal nature I shall. omit
them, : :
Hurrah for the brave old pioneers! Long
may they live to enjoy the land which they
have helped to bring to such perfection.
Its glory is told in song and in story, and
their deeds will always: he a pleasure to
write about and to hear.
