Professor Ludwig Morienburger is the latest advance’ agent of that highly exciting event. He . has a novel way of bringing it about. This planet, he says, has jumped its orbit and is wabbling around in space like a drunken man. This irregularity, the professor explains, causes the summers to become hetter and hotter and the*winters to be colder and colder. Before long, he thinks, nobody will be able to make the transit from one extreme to the other, and then the human race will expire. Japanese Bells. Bells were in use in China, Japan and India long before they were known in’ Europe. In the space fronting the temples of Nikko, Japan, there are enormous bells of exquisite purity of sound too heavy to be suspended in any tower whieh
this peop@ build, and so they are swung on low frames of stout. timber, the bei! being only three or four feet from the ground. They are rung-by means of battering rams, made of long joists of hardwood, suspénded so as to swing by the united aid of many human hands. They give out soft and muffled though deep and farreaching notes: Says He Was Tortured. “TI suffered such pain from corns I could hardly walk,” writes H. Robin‘. son. Daft on Hangings. An eccentri¢é man named Evans, who recently died in Carmarthenshire, Wales, devoted his life to wit7 nhessing hangings, making the acquaintance of executioners and collecting relics of murderers. In’ the early days* of. public hangings he would travel any distance to see a man “turned off.” He was so fascinated by the business that on the’ death of Calcraft he applied for his post. As this was not granted, he set up a gallows in his own house and invited his friends to test the noose. Arrested and Set Free. Dr. J.H. Hanaford says in the Westtern Plowman: Ifthe first cough is properly treated, the first step in the direction of consumption arrested, the langs’developed, the breath set free, we ! not fear consumption.” Kemp's Balsam ‘for the throat and lunge is the proper treatment for the first cough.
