Ogi 55 ES 50d i BRS ee ce 08 March 28, 1900 = = = “HROW AWAY YOUR HAMMERS and quit your your knocking; Nevada City is all right and if you don’t think so why don’t you pack your grip and leave it. Nevada City has woke out-of her long nap and our reorgauized Board of Trade will join the balance of the wide-awake and enterprising people of this State in advertising our climate and resources to capitalists and Eastern. visitors. yLet the citizens of Grass Valley organize a Board of Trade or Chamber of Commerce and unite with us in this movement and old Nevada County will enter on an era of prosperity never before experienced. PP PrTrT FT PF RH PD FB HE DEATH OF CECIL RHODES marks the close of a-career which has been intimately identified with the troubles which led up to and precipitated the war which England is now waging against the Transvaal republic and the Free State. The “mining success ot Rhodes and the great company which he formed led him into entanglements with the Boer nation regarding the control of vast properties. He was behind the movements in legislation which brought about asa culmination the declaration of war. When he was besieged at Ladysmith the Boers were said to. have a price upon his head, but he escaped ‘their wrath. His rapid rise from the ordinary walks of life to the position of wealth, influence and power, which he occupied at the time of his death, was most remarkable. He was without doubt one of the greatest mining promoters of the age and a man of marvelous capabilities. T WAS REGARDED asa sensational episode and so 3) treated by the newspapers that a rich woman should . land in New York one day last week, bringing $75,000 worth of Paris finery, on which she promptly paid duties amounting to ower $31,000. It does not appear that she complained of delay or mistreatment at the hands of the customs inspectors». People who honestly declare their dutiable articles seldom find any reason for complaint. But isn’t it curious that the newspapers should treat as a sensational , episode the fact that a rich\woman voluntarily obeyed the law and paid the duties that the Government was entitled to receive? Is it because the difference between this rich woman and many other rich women lies in the fact that this one paid? * \ Be aS @4a24ea4iihettet# tet 4 vanes ae SN piseretion Is Used. ; éé HAVE OFTEN THOUGHT what an interesting . paper a man could publish if he could see his way clear RO to publish ALL the news,” remarked the man about ; town, recently. When you say this to a man he im. mediately says: “Why don’t yon?” Ifa man could issue his paper from a bomb-proof office, wear a coat of mail and be escorted around by a body guard, he might be able todo so. His life would indeed be full of adventure and excitement: att We will.take the case of the man who advises you to run a wide-open paper. He enjoys it when you are roasting a man he has a grudge against, but when you switch around and attack him, a member of his family ora friend, he immediately unsheathes his hatchet and lays in wait for you in order to get your scalp, and, if you allow him to get the “drop” on you he may get it and you take your departure for that select corner of the next world set aside for editors. Suppose we should pry open the doors of a few of the’ closets that conceal family skeletons about town and give some of their history, how long before our office would be blown up with dynamite? The public has no idea of the number of people who call at our office and request that we suppress this or that \ piece of “spicy” news. It would surprise you if you could keep tabon these people. It is a great satisfaction to see your enemy “roasted,” but it is neatly hades when you are the victim. Did you ever stop to think of these things when you censured the local paper for not publishing ALL the news? If not, now is the time to begin to. Remember that the poor editor is only an oidinary mortal and has only one life to live in this world, -o have a little compassion on him and do not ask him ‘o be. dodging missles all the time. a i =—=— ——————_______] The Vice.of Nagging. ., A Letter of Thanks. ae Clouds the’ happiness of the home, i but @ nagging woman often needs heip. Mrs. E. R. Toomas, 27244 Oak St. For sale by H. B. Dickerman, sole agent, tf John Marshal, the netorious robber, had his prelimicary examination at Auburn, and made a confession, which was as_follows: “He stated that he anda cathe the name of Dick Larkin went from Auburn to Todd’s Valley on January 2, 1901. ‘They stayed ata saloon on the top of a hill near Todd’s Valley that night. The next day at noon they went to Todd’s Valley and waited there until everybody had gone away from Quirolo’s store and then went in and asked the proprietor of the store if he had any cheese, he repliei he bad not: Defendant then asked him if he had any bacon, and he said, ‘Yee, I have some bacen in the cellar,’ and proceeded to procure the same. The remainder of the story ag told in defend. ant’s own words is asfollows: ‘We followed the old man down in the cellar. We had eome conversation about the bacon, and while this was going on Larkin went behind him and put his arm around his neck and held him while I tied bis hands with a bandanpa handkerehief. We laid Quirolo down on the floor and I asked Larkin if he could hold bim and he said ‘Yes.’ I took keys out-of Quirole’s pocket and went into the closet where there was a safe. It was sc dark I could not see. I came out and went behind the counter and took some money ina tin cup out ofa drawer, At that time Larkin and Quirolo came upstairs. Larkin ran out the door and the old man fellowed. Quirolo halloed furiously and I followed and left the place. Larkin said the old man was too mach for bim and that in the scuffle he drew his _ revolver and struck the old man with the same, whieh fell out of hie band. Larkin grabbed the pistol egain and dealt anotber blow. Pistol was a light one and was not very effective. Larkin gave op and ranaway. I asked hin if be cut the old man and he said ‘a little. We went through the woods and wandered about during the efternoon and missed our way to where we intended to go. We finally struck the Auburn road, and going down the road ran into. a’ couple of officers They asked us to stop and I ran away, and I never saw Larkin sinee, nor the officers antil I saw them in Auburn,” Catholic Church Fasier Services.
