James H. English left bere this
morning for Graniteville, where he
will open up the Calberteon mine and
pat ten men to work. Dr, A, H.
Tickell of thie city owns a one-fourth
interest inthé mine and has a bond
on the remainder of the interests.
He also has a bond on the National
mine, on the.same ledge. A tunnel
has been run to tap the ledge of the
Oulbertson and will be pushed ahead
slong the course of the vein until the
National shoot is encountered, Both
2. minés have good records as producers
and there is little doubt but that with
the proposed system of working them
cennectedly they will prove to be
more valuable than heretofore. The
ledges. vary in size, ranging from two
to ten feet. For the present the ore
will be hoisted tothe Oulbertson mill
and worked there, and if future developments warrant the ten-stamp mill

Bridges and Vibration.
There are very few bridges in the
world over which troops are allowed to march in: regular step. In
general, when coming to a bridge,
particularly a suspension bridge, the
drums or bands are stopped, the array is broken and the soldiers pass
over without keeping step, or rather
taking pains not to keep step. ‘The
reason is found in the fact that a
very slight initial vibration, if-continued, is imparted to the whole
structure, and in a short time beecmes so strong a downward strain
at every recurrence as speedily to
endanger the safety of the strongest bridge.
The same prineiple is illustrated
in some houses, which can be made
to tremble from roof to foundation
by persistently and regularly pressing with the foot on a loose board
in one of the floors. _ A similar curious circumstance is seen in the case
of certain churches in which it is
dangerous to play the heavy pedal
pipes of a grand organ, for the reason that the vibration becomes so
great as to shatter the panes of
glass in the windows and even to
imperil the safety of the roof.
Boy’s Wild Ride In the Sky.
That it pays to look out and to
keep cool bas just been impressed
on Stanley Hopkins, a twelve-yearold boy of Lynchburg, O. At the
same time he learned how it feels
to hang on a rope 2,000 feet up in
the sky. There was a balloon ascension at the county fair at Hillsboro, and as the big gas bag shot up
Stanley got tangled in the gu
ropes somehow and was jerked hig
into the air. Women and children
fainted at the sight, but the boy
kept his wits, grabbed the ropes and
hung on tight while the balloon
soared nearly half a mile, with the
aeronaut trying in vain to get hold
of him. Finally the man, after telling him to keep holding tight, let
some gas out of the balloon, and
they slowly came down. Stanley
had been gone only eight minutes,
but the crowd was so glad to see
him that it almost emothered him.
The Honest Man Wins.
The world at large soon recognizes the honest man in business,
and it is quick to give him its aproval. “Why do you deal with
r. Jones?” asks one person of another. “Because he always deals
squarely with me,” is the reply.
Such a reputation soon becomes
widespread. Nobody wants to be
cheated of the least farthing, and so
everybody flocks to the place of
business of him who gives value for
value and who trades according to
the tenets enunciated in the Decalogue. An honest business man 1s
not only the noblest work of God,
but he is the crowning triumph of
struggling humanity.
A “Kathleen Mavourneen” Loan.
William H. Rogers, cashier of the
Nassau bank of New York and also
one of the best known men in
banking circles in New York city,
tells the story of:a customer who
came to the bank and said he had
just declined to.make a “Kathleen
Mavourneen” loan, says the New
York Times. In his long experience in banking Mr. Rogérs had
heard of many varieties of loans,
So he
asked what kind of a loan a “Kathleen Mavourneen” loan was.
One of the sort that “may be for
years and may be forever.”
Two Complexions.
Senator Bailey of Texas has a
face like a cherub. It is round and
soft and full of color. One day in
the corridor of the senate he was
approached by a giggling young
woman, who asked rapturously,
“Oh, senator, where in the world
did you get your pretty pink com*
plexion ?”
Bailey was embarrassed only for
an instant. Looking her straight
in the eye and tapping her lightly
on her slightly rouged cheek, he
very gravely asked, “Where in the
