ad Ip VOL. LXYI--NO. 10265 . OIE NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, SATURDAY EVENING, MARCi1 3, 1894. Betablished Sept. 6, 1860, by N. P. Brown neh THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT Published Every Evening, except Sunday. BROWN & CALKINS, = Proprietors. : SERVED BY CARRIERS AT 15 Cts. per Week or 60Cts. per Month WHEN PAID IN ADVANCE : SIX DOLLARS PER YEAR. Cut Out the IN THE Examiner and Chronicle Coupons ‘And send Them to the Daily Transcript Office. —FHE-JACK— RABBIT. Superintendent Storch Makes a Ren port on the Mine. “" We have received from J. B. Storch, ~ superiptendeut of the Jack Rabbit mine, a printed copy of the report recently made by him on the condition and prospects of ‘the mine. We mike the fdllowing extracts: ‘Leave the theoretical consequences aside, which, according to the formation the Jack Rabbit mine‘is lecated on, are extremely encouraging, and judging after the practical experience on the developments from.the. numerous.. prospeot._holes, cuts and drifts on the surface, down to the “lower and finally to the lowest level, 183 feet underground, you will observe a gradual improving of the quartz stringers the ‘deeper you come, increasing in color and width. You jwill find that a number: of minute quartz °stringers. are constantly -aniting to one ribbon of considerable size; —-and_you will find that the white, dead erys= talline, sugar-like color changes into gray metallic colors, finally beginning to be uni‘formly infiltrated with gold and other me—_—__ tallie_gold—and—silver—bearing —sulphurets, ete; And you will find all ever the Grass Valley district that exactly the same_indications guided: the.miners toa-rich strike-in-[all the dividend paying mines. Now come te a common sense cénclusion. “Taking everything into consideration, what theory, practice and the local experi——enee-teach,-you-will__come-to.the conclusion that the Jack Rabbit mine is entitled to the same expectations as any other wellpaying mine in the Grass Valley district, when the line of the settled formation will be reached—therefore, the plan of operations has to be changed.” 2@esCANCELED STAMPS. How America Contributes Toward Papering Rooms in Germany. This. country contributes some thousand -dollars’ worth of material yearly: to the promotion of a fad long prevailing in Germany. “The rage for collecting postage stamps, com. mon enough here, is much more widespread in Germany, and for some time past collec‘tors have been using canceled stamps for -decorative purposes. Millions upon millions of stamps are used annually in Germany to ‘piper walls. A room of moderate size may ‘be papered completely with 100,000 stamps ‘of the ordinary size. Persons who indulge ‘this fancy exercise great. ingenuity in_ the :arrangement of the stamps, and remarkable color effects may be produced by tasteful combinations. When the stamps have been affixed to the walls of a room a tedions piece “of work, the whole is varnished; in order toy °"/¥-last.a couple of menths not leas. than protect the papering from damage. Stamps and parts of stamps ‘are used in. , deeorating tables and cabinets. Those who de this sort of decoration laboriously cut out the head of Washington from the current 2cent stamp and paste the little vignettes by the hundred upon the table or cabinet to be decorated. Then thousands of the tiny figure “2” are cut froin the lower corner of the stamp. and disposed se as to form a border about the repeated head of Washington. Scores of other designs are treated in like fashion, and stamps of various colors are arranged in accordance with the taste of the decorator. One man in New York, not himself a professional dealer in stamps, sends nearly 25,000,000 stamps per year to a dealer in Ger-. inches deep this morning, but the sun many. The same dealer has an agent in caused it to melt very fast. Baltimore who sends him vastly larger quantities. They are sent to the agents from all parts coupons have been sent to this office,'and . . been owing to the fact that the river and VOTING COUPONS. Nevada County Still Leads in they Contest For the Mineral Cup. . The contest for the trophies offered by the Chronicle and Examiner is gaining in interest every day. Solano county is making a determined effort to secure the golden’cup offered by the Examines to the county making the * best general display at the Midwinter Fair. Sacramento county is in the lead forthe Chronicle’s silver cup for the best exhibit of products, and Nevada county heads the list in the contest for the Chronicle’s silver cup for the best mineral exhibit. _ Thus far-ever 1,600 tickets or voting} many are being: brought in every day, the ladies especially taking much interest in. collecting the coupons. Everyone should remember to cut out all the coupons, mineral, products, and general display, and send them all to this office. We want all the coupons, of the three kinds, and will take the trouble! of sorting them. We expect to have a thousand votes to send: below ‘the next time. = ‘__THE DEBRIS COMMISSION. _ Changes Suggested, Favored by Secretary Lamont and Géneral Casey. Wasuisxcron, March 1.—Colonel G. H.] Mendell, President of the California Debris Commission, on February 15th wrote to General Casey, Chief of Engineers of the War Department, -explaining certain difficulties under which the Commission labored, and proposing a remedy therefor. ~~ Secre= tary Lamont today transmittedthis letter to Congress. In substance it is as follows: The Califoruia Debris Commission finds its operations embarrassed by the requirements: of section 12 of the Act can be furtheredby a modification of the lawamendingit. Sec-. W. J. Rogers, Grass Valley, tion 12 contains this sentence: ‘‘Pending} A. Monteith, Joe Conlin; *i publication ‘thereof said Commission, or a committee thereof, shall examine the mine or premises described in such petition.” ing: ‘‘Pending publication thereof or as soon thereafter as practicable the mine and premises described in the petition shall “be éxaminedby-oneor more-membersof the Commission or by an enginver acting “under its orders.” in the Sierra mountains and travel uncertain and difficult. ‘To visit one of these mines requires an absence of from three tosix or seven days from San Francisco, and mem= bers ofthe Commission cannot afford to spend that timz for tiiis purpose. Thecommissien has now one engineer officer under its orders and if necessary can apply for more. That there has not been more delay in the past in the examination of mines has harbor appropriations for the present year have been exhausted, and for this reason ‘they have found time to make the necessary visits. But this,is not likely.to occur again in Section 12 here: outlined is respectfully suggested. Both General Casey and Secretary Lament favor the change prosposed by Colonel Mendall. oe HOME SEEKERS. They Are Bound to Come to Northern California. Appeal: _ A railway man from Kansas City who was here a day or so ago and who has been in.a position to meet a great many people desirous. of coming to California, stated that if the present rate war would 3,000 people from the State of Kansas will take advantage of it and come to California. The most of these are prepared to invest in fruit land and he thinks that as the prices now asked for land in the mest of Southern California is higher than they are prepared to pay that by a like effort a good share of those people would come north of SacramenFrom another reliable source it is learned that a large number of Italians, now located in the State of Iowa, are desirous of coming to California to engage in vegetable gardening andjake the place of the Chinese.
