Eprror TranscripT:—Should-a native of
Nevada City have the desire of making a
journey to the Orient, to him an outline of
the trip taken by the party of which I was
a member may be of service. The trip, by I
expensive. Noting this fact, the Orient»
desirous of being seen, has cometo our Midwinter Fair;thus shortening the distance by
many thousand miles, and reducing the
rites tea minimum. ‘The fare into the
Orient—no extra charge to get out—is about
two dollars and a half, including railroad
The Oriental countries represented at Our
Exposition are: China, Japan, Egypt, Algeria, Arabia and Turkey, both. of Europe
and Asia. Most of the Turks, however, are
Europeans.
I shall, as a matter-of course, consider
that anyone who has lived in Nevada City
for any length of time has-a better idea o
Chinese customs than I can portray. A
mere.pen picture: of .the-building-in--which
our heathen brethern are housed will suffice.
Walking down’ the Midway one cannot
resist stepping into the tall, broad, pagodalike structure which represents China and
the Chinese. On each side of. the small
square hall is p large well-lighted room,
approached by, wide doors set in lowcarved casings. Foe. room on the leftis a
bazaar, well stocked with all that one car
wish for—that is if the wish were according
to John's way of thinking—everything from
a fan or_a_-pair-of chopsticks to an embroid= . —
ered garment or a vase of beaten gold.
To the left of the hall is a restaurant,
furnished with low lacquéred tables. _Deli

served in the thimble-like cups used by the
Chinamen in his home, by good-natured,
greasy-looking subjects of the Great Emperor. A dishful of dainty-looking pink,
white and blue cakes stands in the center
ef each table.
cakes—‘‘ite allt. mattor ot tecte:””
Behind the bazaar and restaurant, includ:
ing both of them in width, is a large room,
which might be called either a department
store or a conservatory. Around three
sides of this large hall(we shall call. it hall
for want of a better name) are small booths
in which are sold such wares as embroidered
silks and screens, Chinese table delicacies
and lacquered furniture. The center of the
_ hall is one mass of flowers which emit an
odor that is not’ the one commonly associated with Chinatown. :
The upper floor of the pagoda is devoted
to a theatre, operated on principles strictly
Chinese. Their drama, which is continuous,
sometimes lasting for many weeks, is acted
by men enly, woitien not being allowed, on
the stage. As lam not conversant with the
language I could not judge the merits or
defects of their acting, so will not. attempt
description.
Some one of the pute suggested that we
pay Japan a visit. None objecting we
trudged across the Grand Court, the divid~
ing line of the two countries,
Showing vur passports, which consist of
silver twenty-five cent pieces; we —passed
under the low, handsomely carved gate and
entered the sacred land of the rising sun.
The peace which reigns here invites the
weary traveler to take advantage of the
ticket which is given in return for every
passport, entitling him to a cup of delicious
tea from the hands of the pretty Japanese
maidens, who sit in their picturesque costumes beside the small beaten-copper pots,
in which the beverage is prepared, ready to
fill the cup of the ticket-bolder. Indeed,
they seem eager to show what good tea they
really can make. With each cup of tea the
visitor receives a dish of the red berries of
the sacred bamboo. The Japanese name for
the fruit, translated into English, signifies
‘‘sacred moneys.” It is quite amusing to
sit in the Japanese restaurant and watch
Americans trying their best to eat with
chopsticks. Most of them, after a few vain
attempts, give it up asa bad job and -use
one stick as a fork.
The artificial waterways and stunted
vegetable growths, for which Japan is world
famous, could not fail to attract attention.
A stork adhd a bronze urn here and there
gives the whole quite a Japanese air.
In his low pavilion. situated on the bank
of a stream, sits the Japanese sketch artist,
with his camel’s-hair pencilsand his paints
on the floor beside him: Fer a small sum
he will put into your note book a beautiful
picture of the ideal Japanese girl, 8S. H.
