The survey began at the . east bank of the Mississippi river, at the line of 81 degrees north, and extended east. This was to be the boundary between the American and Spanish possessions as agreed to by the treaty of 1795. He then proceeded up Mobile river until he reached the camp of the surveyors, who had in the meantime passed through the lands of the Choctaw nation. The line of 81 degrees struck Mobile river about six miles below the junction of the "fombigbee and Alabama rivers. bl The demarcation line determined the old Spanish station of St. Stephens was within the American boundary. The Spaniards deeply regretted this, for the post was important in connection with Indian trade and_diplomacy.
