One of the Robbers and He Is
Killed by Another Robber.
The Oregon express train, No. 15, which
left Wheatland at 2:20 o’clock’ this morning, was stopped by two masked men three
or four miles north of Wheatland.
Engineer Bowsher was surprised to find
himself covered with a revolver by a tall
man, who told him to stop the train at the
next cressing.
After going some distance and when within a hundred yards of a public road, the engineer asked if he should stop. The robber
said ‘‘yes,” and the train was brought to a
standstill,
appearance and covered the fireman with
a revolver, The second robber was a small
man,
The engineer and fireman were ordered to
acconipany the masked men to the express
car; One of the robbers went in and~after
being there a few minutes he was asked by
the other one what he wag doing. In reply
he came to the door and handed ‘out a pistol
anda snuff box, remarking as he did go :°
“Here’s.a bouquet for you.”
Finding they could not get anything in
the express car the men entered one of the
coaches, taking the engineer and fireman
with them. All male passengers were robbed of their money, watches and other valuables, but the lady passengers were not
molested.
The smoking car was then visited. In
this car was Sheriff Bogard of Tehama
county. Seeing that it was a “hold-up” he
kneeled down between the seats, out of
sight, and as the men came along said to
the engineer, ‘‘How many?” The latter replied: ‘*Two,” :
Bogard watched his chance and shot the
larger robber, who died soon after.
As soon as the tall robber was shot, his
pal opened fire on the Sheriff, inflicting a
wound that caused the latter's death jin a
little while.
During the shooting the fireman was shot
in the neck and shoulder and ‘seriously injured;
A passenger named Sampson was hit over
the head and severely cut,
The excitement caused by the shooting
gave the surviving robber a chance’ to
booty had been: placed. Everything taken
from the passengers was recovered,
After the “hold-up” the train proceeded
to Marysville, where the bodies of the dead
Sheriff and the dead robber were taken to
the morgue.
At last accounts the dead highwayman
was unidentified and the small robber who
killed Bogard was still at large..
We are under obligations to the Marysville Democrat for particulars sent “ais by
telephone;also to Sheritt Douglass for information derived from a private dispatch
received by him,
Later advices state that the’ robber who
was killed has been identified and that he
registered at Marysville’as §, Maguire of
