T, Howard at the Methodist Church last evening was listened to and enjoyed by an andience that was limited only by the seating capacity of the house. The interest was intense, as was manifested by the rapt attention with which the hearers followed the gifted speaker. The subject is found in Daniel 2,—31—35, _ and it would be a pleasure to make copious extracts were it possible to do so without marring the perfection of the en semble, but a confusion of ideas prevails ata mental review of the matter; so many salient points abound that a synopsis of the address would at best be but a weak production of words that were images and thoughts that glowed as he brought to light treasures of ancient biblical lore, tracing the thread of history with the ease and confidence of the thorough scholar through the different ages, races, and conditions down to the présent time, touching lightly, of necessity, but every touch telling its story. One marvelled at the facility with which authorities, records and ocurrences were quoted .as though it were an every-day matter to be familiar with all the great and pivotal affairs of by-gone ages and their influence upon the world today. There can be no doubt that many who have read and blindly groped for light upon the subject felt a wondering delight at the simplicity and beauty of the symbol expressed in the text as expounded by the speaker, and the young hearts which are but just opening to the beauties of the revelation of Scripture had a lesson which will afford them a wide field for study, and “‘long, lowg thoughts, ”: Although contending against somewhat of physical distress Mr. Howard was easily in sympathetic nearness to his audience; his genial heart-warmth was irrisistibly winning, while his intellectual qualities commanded the respect and admiration of all. The Epworth Leagu-, to whom the address was given, will long remember the kindness of the act and will not fail to profit by it. o®. In November the men of ‘the State will be called. upon to decide whether that boasted principle proclaimed in 1776 (that taxation without representation is tyranny) is a principle or a subterfuge. If there is an-honest purpose to carry out the declaration you talk and rant so much about, that ‘‘All good governmerits derive their. just powers from the consent of the governed,” see that it is fulfilled in November or acknowledge that assertions are only to jingle. = What woman would not willingly bear the burdens and penalties thrust upon her if borne equally with man? What mother can teach her children patriotism if she conscientiously interprets the full meaning of the Declaration of Independence. When I hear that much glorified document referred to by bombastic orators with such expressions as ‘‘All persons are free and equal,” and that ‘‘the ballot is one of our greatest privileges,” I can but think it would be more trathful to refer to that document as obsolete than claim our Govérnment is conducted on its principles. Women are tired of the meaningless “chivalry” you have given us so long; give us common sense and there will not be so many slurs about irresponsible and uncompanionable women. Opponents cry out that many women do not want the ballot; where suffrage is aot restricted it is used by as large a percentage of women as men and every Governor.of Wyoming has so testified and to its good effect, A large percentage of men ‘lid not want suffrage when it was demanded by the colonies who declared representation a just principle, Now I will ask all voters whose -attention is called to this subject to read the Declaration of. Independence thinkingly, and decide if it is conducted according to the principles it asserts, does it apply to allalike? Give usa fair hearing. Attend the lectures of Rev. Anna Shaw and Miss Yates at the Nevada Theatre on April 30th and May Ist. The former has interested large audiences and received great praise from the press throughout the State. The lectures will be free to all and if you do not believe a word they say you lose nothing but j you time, New Woman. IDEAL AMERICAN HOMES. Interesting Lecture by Miss Anna Shaw in San Francisco. Rev, Anna’ H. Shaw lectured in San Francisco on Wednesday evening on ‘The Amer. ican Home.” After a pleasant introduction by Rev. Dr. Goodwin, Miss Shaw said : ‘*No word kindles more love in the human breast than that of home. of singing its praises; philosophers never weary analyzing its various phases, The statement is repeatedly made that a woman should bein berhome. Thatistrue. Every human being is entitled to have a home, but if one sex need it more than another it is the man Nine times out of ten a woman can get along better than a man when deprived of a home.” ‘The ideal home must have three elements—a man, a woman anda child, You cannot get an ideal home and leave out one of these. No man ever made a home ; he may have a house well kept, but it is nota home., Give a woman two rooms and a cat, and she will immediately make something akintoahome, But housekeeper and not a home-maker. I don’t usually stay awake nights to sympathize with men, but my heart goes out to the man who is followed all his lifetime with a duster and a dustpan. I know such a one. He was dusted every time he came home, and his wife, a good housekeeper, followed him the house over to keep thingsin order. Another woman in the same place was a homehouse. She had six children and every other child that could come there, and it was all so happy that her husband found it the pleasantest place he knew,’ and any visitor was happy to stumble over an occas— ional thing out of place, That woman dusted her mind and made those around her happy. Housekeeping and home-making can and often do go together, but the home is often sacrificed for the house,”’ Love, marriage and divorce were discussed, Humorously and seriously these great circumstances of life were handled, and the many responsibities of a mother analyzed. In summing up Miss Shaw said: “The weakness of the Americans home is the lack of fatherhood, Ia no country. does a father toil harder than in America; every advantage is given the children, but ‘the father does not enter into the child life as he should. The children need the strength of /the good father quite as much as a loving mother, The boys don’t need him any more than the girls, Self-sacrificing fathers give everything they can win for their children ; they make their. lives too easy. I don’t care how good a woman is, a boy and girl, too, should be brought up in a home where a father’s, a man’s, nobility should enter into their lives.’ The lecturer closed with a beautiful tribute to the patriotism which will spring from the ideal broader home of the days to come. inven’ Ss Cherry Pectoral possesses power— ful healing qualities, which manifest themselves whenever this remedy ig emplcyed in colds, coughs, throat or lung troubles, Its snodyi.e and expectorant effects are promptly iealized, It 18 ,a, chemical success and a nedical triumpb, y -s & Ovr oF WEAKNESS comes strength when the blood has mn purified, enriched and appetite restored and the p by Hood’s Sarsaparijla, 8 Pris cure nousea, sick headache, ndigéstion, bil.vusness. old by all drag-From ail Parts of the World, ee tipo 4-0 clock This “Afternoon: Eprror Transorivt: » By actual: count]. : Poets never {tire : Fatally Shot. It will be conservative to say that eight per eent. isa fair average. : Now, if Peter, had loaned his $24 at eight per cent. compound interest, from then until this date, what would ‘its value be, compared with the value of Manhattan island? , Ateight per cent. compound ititerest, money will double once in about nine years. Now, there have been twentynine times nine years, and seven years more, since: Peter made his purchase. Then, if he had loaned his $24 he would have had nearly $400,000 at the end of the, first one hundred yedrs, and more than $200,000,000 at the close of the second century, while in 1894his principal of $24 would have grown to be $20,000,000,000—the value of Manhattan island many. times over.
