A Fraud That Even Experts Cannot Detect.Frandulent twenty-dollar gold pieces have been discovered in San Francisco, which, for workmanship and finish in the coinfillers’ art, surpassess anything heretofore attempted by counterfeiters. Edward Holland, of the Commercial Hotel, first detected two of these bogus coins which came into his possession, and he turned them over to Detective Harris Thursday for investigation. ‘ It is impossible for the sharpest. eye to detect any imperfection in these coins, the outside of them being taken from genuiné double eagles and thé “joining of the two may view thecoin under a powerful glass and still fail te see anything wrong, wiless In weight the coins are only about seventyring is very defective, but as this.may easily be ascribed ‘to a flaw or crack in a good coin, it does not alwayscause experts to reject the filled ones even when they notice the absence of ring. A number of local coin exMr. Holland and none of them refused ‘to accept it, all of them attributing the dullness-6f sotnd-te a crack or flaw and believing the coin to be genuine. Mr. Holland’s suspicions were first aroused by the similarity of the two coins in sound, and he took them to the mint, where the cause of the imperfection was soon revealed. One side’ was found to fit asa sort of lid to a box, and on using a pry to force it out, the center of the coin was found to be filled by a brass disk, which takes the place of something over $5 worth of gold. The workman had used two twenty-dollar pieces to make his filled cuin. _ After hollowing one of them out te the required extent he had cut from the other a lid, which fits above the brass disk used to stuff so tightly that the presence of @ line of joining can not be detected. The work had been done with the most exqnisite accuracy, and those who have much money to handle, will be wise to ascribe a defective ring to something else than a flaw in a good coin. : The Company’s Agent Again YIsits Auburn. C. W. Hineheliff, special agent for. the has been in Auburn this week looking after the business of the company, says the Re= publican. He is putting in a number of new telephones in Auburn, and will visit Forest Hill with the view of running a line to that place. He says that the proper. encouragement his company will place the. Divide in telephone communication with the outside world right.away. What is called a copper *loop” Being’ pat i in between Auburn and Sacramento, so that in a short time our people will be enabled to converse with parties in that city or in San Francisco with more distinctness and than heretofore: Mr. Hinchcliffe informs us that his company will also pat in a. connecting line to (ras Valley and Nevada City, but whether it wil) be taken through’ from Auburn or from Marysville has not yet been determined, 2@o Gs Van Doren Arrested. Lyle P. Van Doren, the fellow who abducted Maud Bearden, fifteen-year-old daughter of A. J. Bearden, was arrested at San Francisco the other day aud has-been taken to Fresno, where the girl’s parents reside. The Beardens formerly resided at this city and later at Grass Valley. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect héaring, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation, can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused ~by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces, any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Cure.
