THE ISLAND: OF CUBA,
The island of Cuba isa close neighbor td the Uaited States, and so long
as itis inthe possession of a hostile.
foreign nation like Spain its geographical position makes it a menace to our
commerce,’
It-lies between the Gulf of Mexico
and the Atlantic ocean in the direct
route of commerce from the Gulf States
to northern poris and Europe. The
channel between Cuba and the line of
islands comprising Key West and the
Dry Tortugas is but 100 mile wide, a
little over four hours’ sail by steamer.
The Dry Tortugas islands which contain our naval supplies are about fifteen
miles west from Key West.
Cuba is 760 miles long by from 20 to
185 miles wide, has a coast line of 2200
miles and owns 200 sheltered ports for
ocean vessels. The mountains in
places rise to the height of 8000 feet.
In area it contains 47,000 square miles,
equal tothe State of New York. Its
population is one and one half mil
lion. Its annual exports average $70,000,000 in sugar and--molasses; $10,000,000 in tobacco and cigars; $5,000,000 in
sone. It_is also a large producer..ol.
cocoa, cotton, rice, sago, bananas and
other tropical fruits,

A Bit'of Fact.
“After all, Margaret, there's ‘no —_—
of blne fire abont as the juggler doer
eggs, cannon ballsiand the like. Theit
pet amusement is to stand on thei:
heads and toss the balis:as if they wer:
standing afoot. The force of gravity
. 8ecems to be’ reversed for their benefit.
. for §bey ‘‘toss’* the balls of fire down,
and the little flames ‘‘fall’’ up. All thir
is set.down just as James MacCourtney
the @ldest settler in the neighborhood.
tells i. He'said.the.other day:
‘*Them .broad windys over there. or
the north side of the old building is the
place where the sisters comes to show
theirselves. The year of the World’
fairy I counted up their performances, a:
they come every 56 days. The reaso:
fer that, is somethin I could never guese
but some sniart young chap here fig
gered out that it was always in the
dark of the moon, I’ve noticed since
that there never was no moonlight whe:
they got up thete in the windys.
**What’s the cause of their bauntix
the old place? Why, sir, the story's a
old there can’t no truth nor lie be mad
out on it. There’s no man in these dig
gin's longer’n I be, an I ken the stor;
only by hearsay, so to speak. I heerd ii
from my granddaddy, an he said he heer¢
it when.he was.a young man comir
here. That mus’ ‘a’-ben in the thirties
Onnyways he sed that the two. sisters
‘was persdiditaters. It seems like they
give a performancetin the house, which
‘was new then in course, an the pair of
them agreed ter be-locked up in aboxthet was to be sealed an fastened, an
then they was to,get out without break
in the.seals) Well, they was locked up
but they couldn't get out, an purty soon
they foun theirselves so short of breath
they couldn’t holler loud envugh to be
heerd, In course they was in a room
away from the otber people, so’s the
common folk conldn’t see how. the trick
was turned. When they couldn’t holler
they tried rappin, an the others only
thought they was a-workin out of the
box an s0 didn’t pay attention. After
an hour er so the other peoples got nerv
ous an went in an opened the box, ar
there was the two sisters, cold dead
They buried ‘em together in the box in
the yard back of the house, an that’s
why they. juggles the fire balls upside
down like. '’’—-Chicago Chrunicle.
