THURS AY THE ISLAND: OF CUBA, The island of Cuba isa close neighbor td the Uaited States, and so long as itis inthe possession of a hostile. foreign nation like Spain its geographical position makes it a menace to our commerce,’ It-lies between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic ocean in the direct route of commerce from the Gulf States to northern poris and Europe. The channel between Cuba and the line of islands comprising Key West and the Dry Tortugas is but 100 mile wide, a little over four hours’ sail by steamer. The Dry Tortugas islands which contain our naval supplies are about fifteen miles west from Key West. Cuba is 760 miles long by from 20 to 185 miles wide, has a coast line of 2200 miles and owns 200 sheltered ports for ocean vessels. The mountains in places rise to the height of 8000 feet. In area it contains 47,000 square miles, equal tothe State of New York. Its population is one and one half mil lion. Its annual exports average $70,000,000 in sugar and--molasses; $10,000,000 in tobacco and cigars; $5,000,000 in sone.
