A Supposed Stuice Robber.
The Chinaman Ah Jack, who was shot at
Quaker Hill yesterdy morning, will most
likely recover, as his injuries are not very
serious, , He received a portion of a charge
of shot in the neck and side of his face, . It
is believed by some that he was peppered
while attempting to rob sluices, as there’are
no powder marke about the wound, which
would be the case had he been shot at close
range either accidentally or intentionally.
_ John Sherman, who went after the injured Mongolian with a sleigh, brought him
to town last evening and took him to Chinatown, where his friends have taken charge
of him,
May Have to Surrender.
The Board of Location of the N. G. C.
recently referred the matter of organization
of independent military companies on partial appropriation to the Adjutant General.
That officer has reported adversely against
the petition of proposed independent companies, It is thought that Cempany H of
Grass Valley will be obliged to surrender its
arms and equipments to the State, although
Captain Riley is still hopeful that Grass
Valley will have a military company.

Invitations have been issued for the wedding of George Adair and Miss Nellie Martin, a young and popular couple of this city,
which will take place on Thursday, March

just above the heart. He will probably die.
Five years ago Doyle was followed here
from Portland, Or., where he had been in
the lumber business, by an officer, who took
him back there on a charge of embezz ement
and forgery. His mother settled this gage
by paying $800.
Not long ago he got into some trouble in
New Jersey, and a warrant was issued for
his arrest, but it is said that the case was
settled, He returned to Newburgh on Saturday night, and a short time thereafter
shot himself.
AT LEAST FOUR LIYES LOST,
Urtea, N. Y., March 3.—The Genessee
apartment house in this city was. burned
this morning. It was seven stories high
and. contained 250 inmates. Four lives
were lost, The building cost $80,000 four

Getting Ready.
Orders have: been.issued. by. the Navy
Department directing that stores for the
battleships Oregon and Massachusetts be
assembled at Mare Island — and. League
Island, respectively. These orders are ip
anticipatiop of the early completion of the
vessels and their éntrahce into. commission.
It is a matter of months to assemble stores
for a large vessel like either of these,
The Navy Department is taking steps to
provide ammunition for the thirteen-ineh
guns for the Indiana and the battleships
Oregon and Massachnsetts. when they are
placed ‘in commission. Samples of this
powder are on their way to the Indian Head
proving grounds from the California Powder
Works. Should it give the required veloc~
ity of about 2100 feet per second and less
than fifteen tons pressure, it will be accepted by the Government,

Died at the Hospital.
Peter Young, who has been a resident:of
this place a long time, died at the County
Hospital this morning. Some years ago the
deceased was pantry man at the Union

Death From Pneumonia.
Alexander Haven died at Glen brook
early this morning, from pneumonia, after
asickness of two days. Deceased was
formerly engaged in ranching, but of late
worked at.the carpenter’s trade, He, was
47-years of age. _ A wife, two> sons, aged
respectively 16 to 14 years, and a daughter
six years old, sutvive him, Deceased is a
brother of Mrs, John Hart of this city.

Sheriff Douglass today sold the Rainbow
