How Minard Crowe .Savéa the . Schooner Arthur Binney. % Lashed for six hours to the wheel of the fishing schooner Arthur Binney, with fey seas dashing in his face, 18year-old Minard Crowe brougbt the vessel inside the harbor ligtits/ of Boston out of one of the worst storms ever seen along the New England coast. Three dories were carried away by the 8eas, the aft slide was broken from its ‘fastenings, and the booby hatch was heaved off as if it had been of paper instead of iron boand oak. : For three weeks the Arthur Binney had been at sea, with the wind in its teeth all the time. From rough water at the beginning the storm grew and YOUNG CROWK AT THE WHEEL. grew. It was the first fishing trip of the season. Luck was indifferent. The Banks were muggy and storiny, and just one week before the scbooner made Boston harbor the captain turned the Binney’s nose -toward land. One morning Captain Croucher stopped to talk with Crowe at the wheel, when a tremendous sea reared above the vessel’s. side and swept thé deck. The captain .barély had time to duck into the galley, and from that moment until port was made Crowe held the wheel, balf drowned ard half frozen. Lost Her Match. Loren P. Merrill of Paris tells the etory of the particular old woman, and he makes her a resident of Livermore. She was not only old. ‘ut she was of the worrying. fretting species of antiq-: uity. She had fretted away her friends land relatives-unti] she was at length living alone in a small house in the outskirts of the town Just as she was retiring one bitter cold night. she dis covered that but one unlighted match remained in the house. She lay awake until almost. daylight, worrying and disturbing herself with wondering if the match was good. At last she got up and hunted up the mateb and struck it to see if it would light ber kindHpgs in the, morning.—Lewiston (Me.) Joarnal. ¢ Taken by Surprise. “That cousin of yours is from Chica go, isn’t he?” asked the village postmaster. “Yes,” replied Farmer “How d'ye know?” “When be was in here yesterday and asked if there was any mail for the Hapcrafts, . told bim no. And then a second later when he was turning away . said: ‘Hold up. There is one letter for them.’ I noticed that when . said ‘Hold up’ be threw up his hands quicker’n lightning.”—Chicago Tribune, Haycraft. He Doesa’t Like Aqeariums, Why any one should ever have de sired to own or to vist an aquarium is a mystery. The view of fish, except when nicely grilled or when suspended at the end of a fishing line, is one of the most uninteresting of sights. The other animals when in confinement display traits which are more or less interesting. The lion has a sense of humor and displays it in the most pleasing way when he devours the lion tamer who has entered too often into ais cage. The bear in his thirst for buns seems so much like the human boy that the spectator of his antics frequently feels an irresistible desire to hit him with a stick. 3 But the fish has not a single interesting trait. He will swim around the tank in which he is confined with a persistence which is maddening to the nervous spectator. He never engages in a genuine fight, but contents himself ‘. with an occasional surreptitious bite. of an enemy’s tail, which gives no true satisfaction to the beholder. If he happens to be a large snake thinly dis guised as an eel or an octopus or some other alarmingly ugly fish, be will sometinies swim directly at the glass through which the visitor is looking at him and thereby give the latter a momentary sensation of horror, but the average fish cares nothing for the publie and treats his visitors with calm contempt. An aquarium without fish. like a seashore resort without the sea, is. unobjectionable, but an aquarium with real water and real fish is the dreariest object in nature.—W. L. Al Popular Public Taste. Hams, Bacos and Lard. ‘den in Pearson’s Magazine. 7 ete anh thé tae: co If a Fillpino enters the house of a European Hving in an unassuming “way, he will not believe that the Huropean is either wealthy or wise, and, although his manner may be correct, it will not be humble. On the other hand, if he visits an ignorant man who indulges in great splendor, he will at once become exceedingly respectful. Mr. Phelps Whitmarsh, who in The Outlook gives his &xperiences ‘in’ the islands, tells the story. of a wealthy provincial visiting Manila for the first time, who asked. to be presented to the governor general. : When he reached the palace, he . ’ found tge governor taking coffee on his’ piazza, dressed comfortably in a white cotton suit. The Filipino re} quested that some favor be extended to his district, and his request. was granted. He then withdrew. The offieial who had procured the presentation asked him what he thought of the general. “Why,” replied the visitor in a tone of disappointment, “he is no different from any other white man.” It so happened that the general was told of the incident, and he gave orders that at his next reception the Filipino should be present. _Upon entering the throneroom and seeing the general in full Beiter, surrounded by his brilliant staff,’ with the accessories of splendid tapestries, laced ushers ard all the pomp and . splendor of these Spanish functions, the provi. jal grew pale and, kneeling in deep humility, exclaimed: “This is indeed my general!” So impressed was he that the following morning he sent a pair of handsome horses to the general with a note which read: “My general, yesterday I liked you so much in your uniform of gold that I send you this pair of horses, but do not use them when you dress in a white suit.” Trying a Donkey. A newcomer in Africa has many surprises, .A, B. Lloyd, the author of “Dwarf Land and Cannibal Country,” narrates an amusing little experience of his own in purchasing a donkey in Zanzibar: We had to procure donkeys, by no means an easy task. Of course each ‘. one had to be tricd, as we were to use them for riding purposes, and in the course of the work we had various experiences. I had set.my mind upon a fine female donkey and took her out fur an afternoon’s ride, I shall not forget it., At first when I mounted her she would not move, in spite of all my most tender persuasions, and ‘finally she began to back, Now, the streets of Zanzibar are very narrow, and coming up behind me was a large bullock wagon. My sweet tempered donkey backed right on to the horns of the bullocks. Then it was no longer a case of making her go; but of making her stop. Away she flew, right along the Naza Moja road, and nothing I could do would check her headlong career. In fact, I soon tired of trying and let her go. On she went, right in among the cocoanut trees, regardless of everything until she came to a steep bank. Here she stopped. This showed that she had good sense, and I devided to keep her. A Defender of Black Snakes. The reporter was advised not to ki a black snake under any circum stances. An old, honest, reliable mai explained this: “Only a few days ago . saw a biacl racer whizzing around in a circle, bi flaming eyes distended. His attentiot seemed riveted on something not fa away. I advanced, and, to my aston ishment, I saw a large rattlesnake coil ed up in battle array. The black snak continued his circults, getting a littl nearer to its victim each time. Afte 10 or 15 minutes the rattlesnake drop ped his ‘head on the ground. Almos instantaneously the black snake pounc ed upon its victim. After securely fas tening his teeth in the back of the ra: tlesnake’s head he began his dead]; coiling. Within five minutes that rat tlesnake was dead.’ So don't kill black snake.” The color came in the old gentle man’s face as he was relating th above, and he said: “Boys, black snakes are game, bu they won’t hurt you, for I had one fo: a pet for years, and because my ok woman woke one night and found th snake in bed she raised an awful fusi and killed it.’—Lebanon (Ky.)
