An Important Decision.
fudge Gregg of San Luis Obispo county
in a case recently brought before him, har
= decided that County Assessors are not er"titled to fees for the collection of State pell
taxes, as has been the custom for man)
years, but that the fifteen per cent shoul
go to the school fund of the State. This is :
matter of much importance to County Assessors throughout the State, since in thi
aggregate the perquisites they will lose wil
amount te-semething like $100,000: [Ther
Constitution and the statute of the Legislature, and without doubt the question wil
be referred to the Supreme Court for fine]
determination.
A Generous Spirit.
In the War Cry, issued Saturday, we fine
the following: A couple of members of th:
Grass Valley fire department called at th:
quarters of the local Salvation Army officer
recently for a donation to help their organzatin. The Captaim gave them fifty cents
stating it was all the change he had. When
reported on at the meeting of the department, the leader moved that all present pui
in ten cent, to be returned to the officers a:
a mark of wppreciation for the self-sacrificing spirit shown. The Captain was surpris‘ed a few nights after to receive the sumo!
$1 50 from a member depntized to wait on
him.

an altercation, a shot and a dead McEwen,

it will learn to roar as ineekly as:a sucking
dove.. Something will be-done-and—donc
speedily to avert the danger of such a fellow
going mad. Arthur McEwen has killed
himself, unless he is out for him. No pape

Very Queer
Are the sensations experienced by the
nervous and dyspeptic. Unaccountabk
palpitation, buzzing in the ears, flushing of
one side of the face, odd taste and tingling
in the mouth, constant restlessness, stinging
in the gullet and sinking in the stomach,
acute sensitiveness to slight sounds that
magnifies them ténfold, low spirite—thesc
are only 4 few. of the charming experience:
of the individual who suffers from combine
nervousness and indigestion—a team that
usually travel together. Their gay anc
festive career,is, however, brought to a ful
stop by that greatest of stomachics, Hostet
ter’s Stomach Bitters, which alse overcome.
their allies—constipation and biliousness
This pepular reimedy fortifies those who ust
it against malaria, chronic .rheumatism and
kidney complaint, restores nervous quietud:

A terrible encounter with a boa in
the wilds of the nursery.—St. Nicholas.
Even Mice Are Not All Bad.
Mice as well as wasps catch and eat
flies. A gentleman noticed a mouse
running to and fro inside a grocer’s
window. ‘‘He did not seem to mifid
the stream of churchgoers, but amused
himself. by springing up onto the window pane and catching flies. When he
had caught one, he sat down like 7
squirre] and ate it.’”’—-Exchange.
AROUSED PUBLIC SPIRIT.
Lives of Haman Beings May Be Sacrificed,
but Not Dividends. :
The wild speed of the Brooklyn trolley
traction system is beginning to pinch
where it hurts—in the pockets of capialists. It is cutting down the profits
ind even draining the surplus of the
Brooklyn Elevated Railway company.
At the annual meeting of the stock10lders of that elevated railway compald a heartrending tale as to the ruthessness of the aggressions of the trolley
upon the innocent and long suffering
sapitalist.-The elevated road, with three
nore miles in operation, has carried
-+,250,000 fewer passengers in 1893 than in}
1892. Its surplus has diminished from
$195,295 to $178,180.
‘‘Why,” exclaims —President Ladenburg, ‘‘should a carriage coming faster
than six miles an hour be stopped and a
street car be allowed to run at 10 miles
an hour legally and 15 miles per hour actually?”
Why, to be sure?
may now reiterate. :
The Brooklyn public has too patiently
seen its first citizens, its firstborn babes,
its gentle old ladies and its children with
dolls or other toys in their grasp felled
and crushed out of life by the.reckless
speed of the surface trolley cars. Now
that it finds this speed a menace to the
solvency of corporations and to the dividends of capitalists, it possibly may be
aroused to some effective action.-~New
York Telegram.
