b al [am juin spepes 1 be it, f and 1ays DCy Tials se.— mixSAL. ng NE 1u2m nt, id, " TUESDAY., Brown & Calkins, Publishers. ee MARCH 6, 1894. LOCALS IN BRIEF. “Summarized Mention of Minor Home Happenings. J. J. Jackson expects to get ‘everything moved into his new store in a few days. Pennsylvania Engine Company will hold its regular monthly meeting tomorrow evening. Every member is requested to be present. The funeral of the late William Retallack took place this afternoon from the Congre. gationalChurch. Charles Grimes has purchased a fine cur-: tain or shade for his large show-window and has had a very pretty sign painted on it. We learn that a dance given at Washington Saturday-night for the--benefit—of -William J. Retallack, who died at the New York Hotel Sunday, netted forty odd dollars. The medicine company that. is holding forth in the Transcript building every night draws large audiences, despite the coldness of the weather. El Dorado county was still ahead in the _ contest for the mineral cup as shown by the vote published in yesterday’s Chronicle. A large number of votes for Nevada county were sent away yesterday and when they are accounted for we expect to see Nevada go to the front again. District Attorney Ford went to Grass Valley this morning. to be present at the inquest over the-remains of Louis Francois, who was murdered last. night by George Smith. ° The Hibernia Savings Bank,-of San. Francisco, paid its second installment of taxes Thursday, amounting to $318,000. The bank pays taxes on 6500 mortgages at the rate of $1000 a day, for every working day . in the year. March 30th is the date setfor the ball ef Company H. It will be the first military ball ever held in Grass Valley. and will be well attended. The members ef the Company will appear in uniform. Other companies in this Regiment are expected to be present. The receipts.of the ballwill be _ devoted tothe fund for building an armory. There will be such a variety of costumes worn and characters taken at the masquerade bali Thursday evening that you will not know your nearest friends. Husbands will not be able to pick out their own wives, and vice versa. When the motley crowd assembles it will bea sight worth seeing. and one that those who witness will not soon forget. oat SEVERELY SCALDED. ‘A Little Son of Wiliiam Green Falls Into a Tub of Hot Water. "The little two-year-old son of “Mr, ne Mrs. William Green, who reside on the Grass Valley road near the Pioneer Reduction Works, was severely scalded this forenoon. Mrs. Green was calling at the house of H. Beckman, Sr., and had the child witb her. Mrs. Beckman was washing and had a tub of hot water on the floor, and inte ‘this tub the child fell, receiving a terrible scalding. Its body, face and arms were badly blistered by the almost boiling water and it is feared that the injuries will prove fatal. Dr. Muller was called and did all that could be done to alleviate the sufferings of the child, 26s ee Superior Court. The following business was transacted in the Superior Court today, Hon. John Caldwell presiding: Estate of Jonathan Butler, 4d d THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT "THE CORONERS’ INQUEST. Smith Charged With Murder, and Held Without Bonds. The Coroner’s jury in the pone of Louis Francois rendered a verdict this afternoon, finding that he came to iia death from a gunshot wound inflicted by George Smith, and recommending that the latter be held to answer for murder. ——_—_6e+ Humorous But Sensible. Congressman Bowers of California, while talking on the Bland bill in the House, the other day, said: ‘‘ During the time that I} have been a member of this House I have been paid my. salary in_silver certificates, and by their daily walk and conversation they give the lie to a greatmany beautiful theories preached here. If I want a bag of flour, if I-want some fruit, if I-want a good steak to take home, I can buy it for a silver dollar just as for a gold dollar, ‘and there is not a grocer in this town that you can talk out of accepting a silver dollar for a gold dollar, and there is not a grocer in this town that you can talk out-of accepting a silver dollar for these commodities if you _ . make a gold-standard speech to him an hour long. ([Laughter.] I believe that $50,000,000 more of these certificates can be issued, and that we can stand them; that they wil! be just as good as they are now.” 25 Cents. Boy’s Black, Gray or Brown Wool Hats at B. H, Miller's, 2@e +e A TRANSCONTINENTAL BOULEVARD, Dr. John T. Nagle’s Plan For Furnishing Employment to Men Out of Work, Dr,. John T. Nagle, registrar-of vital statistics, has come out with a novel suggestion for furnishing work to the unemployed. He advocates the building of a great transcontinental boulevard to extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific, in the building of which each state through which the boulevard passed should contribute its share for the employment of labor. “T have had the idea in mind for some time,”’ Dr. Nagle said, ‘‘and1 feel-sure that--gigantic-as would “be the scheme it would pay in the end.: Such a boulevard, laid out with a macadamized roadway and with crmamental-trees along its walks, would certainly enhance the value of property in its immediate vicinity. It would furnish a all over the country, and the bicycle riders would be there by. the thousands. There might bea million of these riders on the road at one time. The boulevard . would be one ofthe greatest sights in. Christétidom. “There would be inns at different points along: its entire length. Mansions would be built along its route too. The construction of such a roadway would give employment to hundreds of thousands of workmen and keep them busy for two years at least. ~ **t donot believe that it is a mere ‘Utopian dream. © Anybody :who has been in the City of Mexico and has seen the superb boulevard leading for miles out from that city, with its giant eucalyptus trees and other monuments, can readily imagine what a magnificent thing such a boulevard would be. Engineers will tell you that the idea is nothing compared to the benefit that would accrue from its construction.’’ —New York Sun. CLEVER AND UNIQUE. Wilsen, 371 Clay St., Sharpsburg, Pa., says he will not be without Dr. King/s New Discovery for Consumption, Cou and Colds, that it cured his -wife who was threatened with Pneumonia after an attack of “‘La Grippe,”” when various other remedies and several physicians had done her no good. Robert Barber, of Cooksport, Pa., claims Dr. King’s New Discovery has done him more good than anything he eveF¥ used for Lung Trouble.__Nothing like it. Try it Free Trial Bettles at Carr Bros. Pi A Counterfeit $50 Bill That Is a Pen and Ink Sketch on Government Paper. ment secret service department was in Brooklyn thé other day looking for an exceedingly clever counterfeiter, who recently counterfeited a $50 bill, using only pen and ink. The paper was the -regular silk fiber paper, made only by the government. _The counterfeit bill was passed on a New York bank and was only detectéd when it reached the ‘. subtreasory and it was found thatthe} word ‘‘Series’’ had been omitted. There is no clue to the artist. i This unique counterfeiter is supposed to be a man who has for years defied jhe efforts of the United States secret service officers to detect him. There are specimens of his work on exLibition in Washington. His work has always been so perfect that it was almost impossible todetect a bill he made from the genuine article. It is all done with a pen and ink and on the same quality paper that is used in the genuine bills, The great difficult in the way of his capture is that he has no-tools. He is an artist. He sits down and drawsa bill as an artist draws a picture. Even if he was captured in his room with a bill in his possession, there might be no evidence toconvict him, as he could say he had received it from somebody else. Jt must require a long time for him to complete a single bill, and the skill he displays at his work is an indication that if he devoted his talents to honest employment he would make more money, Transatlantic Mail Service. The discussion of the question of American mail routes, which is perennially revived in the English newspapers, has at last taken a common sense being roundly denounced because they refuse to send the mails in fast steamers unless they‘ carry the British: flag. Twice last month the Saturday mails were sent on a slow Cunarder, when they might have reached New York two days earlier if dispatchéd by the American line. The fast German boats leaving Southampton-on Sunday: and Thursday get no mail, except specially addressed correspondence. The British authorities persist in limiting the mails to America to two per week, although four weekly niails are sent from New, York. The protest is becoming so loud that it is barely possible that a reform may be effected in the course of time.
